You need to look at getting a Thompson-Center Encore, then you can have any caliber you want and then some. It only takes one shot anyway, so you don't need a magazine with 3-4 shells. One shot-one trophy.

Pappy, I'm totally "D-O-N-E" with "anything" interchangeable..."ever again"! My luck has been 100% with all of it...100% "BAD". Thompson Encores, Contenders and the like have proven a nightmare for me. Never happy with the groups. Never happy with the stock configuration. Never happy with the eye relief...Never happy...."AND"...It just ain't T/C stuff. I had a Colt National Match 45 and an "Ace" 22 L.R. conversion unit. The 45 shot like a ball-a-fire. You install the Ace coversion and the groups sucked! I wound up selling the Ace conversion for enough money to but a Colt Woodsman / Match Target...and it shot one ragged hole! Now I have 2 complete pistols that "both" shoot. I had a Ruger 22/22Magnum convertible. The 22 Mag would group and the 22 L.R. wouldn't. I sold that revolver and bought a Colt Diamondback in 22 L.R. and another in 22 Magnum. "Both" shoot better than you can lie about. OK: You get my drift. The final straw was my custom T/C encore in 45 caliber (muzzle-loader). I tried loading by pellets, Black powder by weight, black powder by volume, Pyrodex by weight, Pyrodex by volume, Shockey gold by pellet, weight, and volume. 100 grain / 120 grain and 150 grain loadings for "all of the above". This was over a course of "2"...count them "2" hunting seasons. I contacted T/C and they told me it was due to the forearm and I bought a fix for that...Same result. Then they told me it was due to too much "cheek" pressure on the stock!!! "WHAT"!! That was it..."SOLD"...and I ain't lookin' back. I'm sure other folks have had good luck with everything I have mentioned above...Great! I ain't gonna' try again. I like bolt-action / straight-shootin' rifles. I have way more money in the stuff than the law allows...but we're now talking about long...L-O-N-G range shooting. If it ain't one hole at 100...It's a clean miss at 1100-1200 yards! OK: Rant over. Thanks anyway Mike. Best, Capt. Chris

1,200 yards?
Have you thought about going with a 300 Rem. Ultra Mag for that distance?
Good accuracy at that range usually requires a custom blue-printed action and match grade barrel in a well bedded stock. Are you looking for a rifle to be used a basis for custom work or just a factory gun to be used at those ranges?

Rob, Yes: Correct. I currently have "2" Chandler sniper rifles, both in 308 Win. One is full-size (26" Hart barrel) and one is a 20" carbine. My name as well as my rifle is written up in the 4th edition of Col. Chandler's sniper books series. I've been shooting long range for a few decades. I also have a "Hill Country" in 30-06, which is my #1 "go-to" hunting rifle. One of the members of my huntin' club recently bought a Sako "TRG" in 300 Win. Mag. and we shot it out to 1,000 with pretty good results, i.e. 6" groups. It has a very heavy 28" factory barrel. I feel I can improve on that with a custom bolt gun. One of our members shot a doe at 1147 yards this year! I'm not into that, but big bucks? That's a different story, provided I have the correct equipment and proper conditions for a good clean shot. 2 members are in the 338 Lapua genre. I think I can achieve what I need with a 300 Mag....and, No: I'm not protested to 300 Ultra Mag. or 300 Weatherby...or 30/378 Weatherby. Best, Capt. Chris PS: Here's the "Hill Country" with an 11 point whitetail, shot late one afternoon at 460 yrds....CCS

The 338 Lapua Mag. is a "one of these days" project for me.
The military has decided to get 300 Win. Mag. sniper rifles and use Sierra 220 gr. MatchKings. So that cartridge will do the job, I just might want a little more left over energy out there with a 300 Ultra Mag for game myslef. The "TRG" isn't your average hunting rifle, so I'm not surprised at its performance at 1,000.
What bullet are you thinking of using for hunting at that distance? The 208 AMAX is getting a lot of attention too.
Keep us informed of the progress of this project, I for one find it very interesting.

Captain,
I shoot a Ruger .300 Win. mag with a 26 inch medium weight barrel. I only shoot 180 grain bullets out of mine. Bear, moose, whitetail, and muledeer have all dropped like rocks when hit by my .300. I have shot/shoot Sierras, Hornadys, and Noslers out of mine. My rifle's longest shot was 480 yards on a whitetail. Typical hunting shots up here vary from 50 to 350 yards.

My area is open parkland along a good sized river in North Central Saskatchewan. We are lucky in that those ranges are pretty typical up here. But when it comes to coyotes, we will crack off at them way out.
There is a group of guys up here that do shoot at the long distances. They have a lot of fun at it. Bergers are their favored bullets. The .300 Win. mag is also a favorite of theirs.
