EDO Photo Contest New Rules:

1) The EDO Photo Contest is specifically designed to encourage and promote photographic excellence, and the photos are judged based on their technical *and* creative merits.

2) The First Place winner receives a prize.

3) If the judges determine that a Second Place winner is appropriate, one will be awarded. However, the Second Place winner does not receive a prize, but instead the photo becomes eligible for the annual photo contest. Note that not all EDO Photo Contests will have a Second Place winner.

4) Each person is allowed to submit only one photo, and the photo must be their own original work.

5) The EDO Photo Contest will be run semi-monthly, specifically for two-month periods.

6) The first Annual EDO Photo Contest will be judged by the same judges for the EDO Photo Contest that runs every two months, but forum members will vote for the winner of the subsequent Annual EDO Photo Contests.

7) A photo that has been submitted for a EDO Photo Contest cannot be submitted again for subsequent EDO Photo Contests.

8) Naturally, all photos must include at least one genuine Randall Made knife.

The judges are: Edoardo Garofoli, Jim Gates and Ken Lunde

-----------------------------------------------

- Now you can submit your photos here

- Please be advised the photos need to be within this thread It will be real hard to pick them out from posts in numerous other threads. You may make your regular posts about your photos for discussion, but place one copy of the photo you wish to enter, within this thread

- This contest closes at 12:00 pm noon, EST, October 30, 2010.

Do these Criteria still stand? I think they should.

Criteria for your vote should be:

1. Photo content and uniqueness of the presentation of the knife. 50% (How rare the knife is does not count anything here or anywhere in this contest.)

2. Photo quality. 50%

3. Popularity of the person posting or knife in the photo (otherwise this should not be a vote for your favorite participant or Randall knife). 0% (zero percent)

Tony,

Edo can correct me if I am wrong, but given that judging is now done by three judges, and not by forum members voting, those criteria are now implicit, and need not be mentioned.

I'd like to elaborate on the above, specifically how it relates to what you wrote:
Quote:

1. Photo content and uniqueness of the presentation of the knife. 50% (How rare the knife is does not count anything here or anywhere in this contest.)
If you read Rule #1, this directly corresponds to creative merit.

2. Photo quality. 50%
Likewise, this directly corresponds to technical merit.
Quote:
3. Popularity of the person posting or knife in the photo (otherwise this should not be a vote for your favorite participant or Randall knife). 0% (zero percent)
The new rules much better guarantee that the spirit and intent of this former criteria will apply.

Well,
A friendly opinion...
Taking away involvement of the members takes some of the fun out of it,
and well, involvement is a good thing, it should be encouraged on a Forum.
It will all probably work fine this new way, I just think that lessening the involvement
and contributions of all the members is something that should thought about.

Tony,

I think you hit the nail squarely on the head.

It is no longer a Members contest.

I could agree with the decision if the regular prize was going to something more that a $13 embroidered hat or an annual prize of an embroidered denim jacket. Now if the yearly prize was going to be a Randall Knife or something comparable that's totally different and I could understand the need for a more formal judging process.

Come On Guys!, Over the years this has been a laid back, mostly informal contest just for fun that has yielded some great photographs in the process and now you announce a judging panel for a "Members Contest" with ZERO input from the Members you expect to participate. crazy

Looks like this forum needs something similar to the Tea Party Movement

When it comes to Creative Merit, well hell, that's totally subjective from the get-go but you could at least list some examples and as for Technical Merit, unless you get into things that are quantifiable, Technical Merit is totally subjective as well. What are you talking about? Focus, Resolution, Contrast Ratios, Depth of Field, Lens Distortion? Creative Merit = Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder and Technical Merit is based on the root concept of measurable parameters.

The new judging process seems to be nothing more than the subjective opinions of three designated members vs. the subjective opinions of the entire viewing/voting body.
