Since Rex mentioned 1911 builds, I thought it only fair to point out that some of the guys on the 1911 forum (aka M1911.org) actually are "building" a 1911 and making it available to their forum members. Last time I lurked...er looked, it was about ready to go into production.

I agree Harry. I don't know that I would vote for a 9mm either (and the "plastic" trigger would definitely have to go), but it is a very interesting read.

If we decide this build is doable and a "go" there are many ways to go with it. If we are going to get Gene Beal to make a custom pair of grips to match (close to match) a Randall knife handle there will be some things that need to be addressed.

A) Certain materials are difficult if not almost impossible to use. Musk ox, for example, as has already been documented is more likely to shrink when applied as scales on something. (It can shrink other ways also, but more trouble has been reported on scales)
B) Some exotic woods work well on solid handles but get a bit brittle for scales causing slight chips / checks around the edges.
C) Expense! Musk ox scales long and thick enough for a Randall and grips would run hundreds of dollars depending upon what knife we choose. The same with ivory, but not quite as bad.
Having worried ya'll with all of the above, I should tell you that many...many possibilities exist. I am excited about this if you folks think we should proceed. I would like to hear from you and specifically hear your ideas for Randall knife model and handle material!

For a classic like the 1911, what about a classic Randall #1 APFK.

Are we talking about a concealed carry pistol? If so then how about a Gambler or Guardian? Ivory scales sure look good on a pistol. 45 would be my choice of cal. Stag also make great grips. I have a beautiful set of stag on a Kimber Warrior and they really set the gun off nice.

Personally, I would be leaning toward a 5 inch blade since the 1911 originally came with a 5 inch barrel. Some suggested models would be the Combat Companion, 5 inch Gambler and a 5 inch Model 1.
You all know I like ironwood to and that makes a nice handle and grips, so would ivory and perhaps the new Ivorite, let's hear some more ideas
