Yeah, I was nervous. My first effort was to try to chip the varnish off with my thumbnail, but it took me an about an hour to get maybe 5% of it off and I figured there had to be a better way. Both paint thinner and nail polish remover came to mind, but my wife's bathroom was closer than the garage and her supply of que tips was there as well. I started working a small area of the butt with a que tip and the varnish started to dissolve. I exposed a large enough area to make sure that the surface of the ivory was not being compromised and then had at the whole handle. Took me no more than about 15-20 minutes.
