I recieved an email shortly after ending my blitz today from a very nice man with some information that I really enjoyed....here it is

First the 43 Whittler

"Mr. Hughes is absolutely correct in that it being an older Case pattern. There is a more modern version of the "43" pattern which is an entirely different knife I know nothing about. The pattern Tony and Reese made is the old, original 43 pattern from around the turn of the century (second to last turn). It was made in the version you displayed in red bone as well as a version like it except in place of your clip point was the large wharncliff shown on the half whittler Reese made."

Below is another variation on this pattern

The Anglo Saxon Whittler

"As far as the pressed stag on the Anglo Saxon whittler goes, it's not very attractive,  but fairly correct to the original knife on which both Case, Tony, and Reese patterned their knives. Here are a few scans of an original IXL Anglo Saxon Knife from around 1900 or so which exhibits that same tight grained stag that so many English knives from that time period did.

It's about the only place you'll see it other than on that Bose knife you posted. I'm guessing someone across the pond wanted to get one hafted with as original scale material as possible as was available. There certainly isn't any of that stuff around these parts. Maybe the original was a pressed version as well. There are a lot of older English knives with similar "stag " on their sides, just no modern ones."

Below is a nice example of old "pressed stag"

You can see some of the older (up to about 1895 or so) Sheffield "exhibition" quality knives with truly drop-dead stag - and much of this has a super-fine patterning. I speculate that it came from a sub-species or isolated population of sambar deer that were long gone by 1900 or so.
