The indexing (two lines towards the top) is largely based on elk-sized target, so I'm thinking a rifle for that purpose (bonus in that I live in "elk country"). I have a .270 that'll do but I'm thinking about going .30-06 instead.

30-06 sounds like a great set up for that scope.

I may have dreamt this up!
Those parallel lines at the top define a measurement, ie) 12 inches or ?, when setting the scope on a predetermined power. Knowing the measurement between a certain part of an animal is 12" or ?, fit that part of the animal between the two lines and bring the scope into focus.
Then read the distance on the scale on the bottom.
Again this idea may have been brought on by a vivid dream or 70+ years of imagination!

Nice choice for the 30-06 in my opinion it is the standard which others are judged.

I am probably wrong on this but I bet that over the years,more big game has been taken by that cartridge than most others.

165 to 180 grain seems to be the most popular choice.

Rod, you're very close. The two lines at top are for the the target, "shoulder to brisket" on an elk-sized target. I haven't gotten close enough to an elk to whip out the measuring tape, but I'd guess it to be in the 30" ballpark.

Get those two lines on the target, you zoom the power in/out so that the lines just touch each end of the critter.

Read the tombstone, lowest number. Turn the elevation turret to that setting.

center cross-hairs, adjust power, fire.

There were four different turret caps, A-D (The "D" cap was for lower-power loads, doesn't really factor into this), each with a chart of assorted calibers, pill size, muzzle velocity. I only have the "A" cap, so I may end up needing to run a dope card for the last step.

I have all the gear and supplies to reload for 25-06, 30-06 (M1 Garand), 308 (M14), 30 Carbine, and 44 Mag (Marlin 1894). Surprisingly (OK, not that surprising), the last two happily use the same powder. The first three have some overlap, but not ideal to use same for any two.

So far the only thing I've pressed together was 25-06 for the flatlander rifle, working up loads and ladder-charting it out.
