...Both in rifle design and as a caliber, I cannot find "anything" better. I can recall (& this still holds true) nearly every Wildcat, Proprietary, European. British or American rifle cartridge in it's class being compared, on way or another, to the 30-06 Springfield, also referred to as 30 Government M'06 or & 62x63mm.
I prefer this great round over all others and, as any of my close friends or asocciates would testify, I walk the walk. I currently owned "3", all are users, all are shooters and all are killers! Almost every hunt, especially for big bucks-n-bulls, etc, one's on my shoulder!
I am curious as to our other members feelings are toward this Grandaddy. I would like to here from all-y'all! Hunting season is upon us...so...WHY NOT!
Let me preface this by stating that I am also in love with the 257 Roberts, 7mm-08 Rem., 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser and the 300 & 375 H&H (Holland & Holland).
For this particular topic (at least for now) let's stick with the '06. In my opinion, there are many +'s to this round. Name another that you can purchase factory ammo, weighing from 55 grains to 220 grains! There ain't one.
OK: No rant...It's your turn.
Stay Sharp...(& well-armed),
Capt. Chris

Capt,
The 30-06 is the standard by which all other calibers are judged.

It is the basis of many wildcat cartridges over the years to become factory loadings. The 25-06 and 35 Whelan come to mind for that.

Can't go wrong with the 30-06.

Hi, since I'm a Garand guy I endorse your post. I thought I would never say this but the CMP is finding original Garands hard to find, regards, Mike

Well--

Apparently cannot paste text, or else the system does not like some character I used.

I've got a Browning 30/06Bar that I use to deer hunt with and a
Remington 700 R5 Mil Spec in 308.Both are accurate and dependable.
However they are safe queens now.

I shot one moose and more than two dozen white tails with my Remington 788/30-06. It was an excellent, accurate rife. One of my best friend's brothers wanted the rifle and I sold it to him. He is still using it extensively, 20 years later.
I then bought a 30-06 BDL. Only shot one white tail with the BDL, plus a couple coyotes.
Since then I have got out of white tails, but still scare coyotes with a .243, BDL plus it is tricked out somewhat.
When I was younger in the province of Saskatchewan we used to shoot jack rabbits with a lead cast bullet (can't remember bullet weight or loads). The only rule was the rabbit had to be running.
I would recommend a 30-06 to anyone shooting big/ medium game in North America.
