Robt,
Thank you,I thought it was the Model 760.

The 35 Whelan was a handloaders dream. Can load it down for deer with nice cast bullets.

While I agree with everything said in favor of the .30-06, I actually bought a .308 Win for my new deer rifle.

308 may have already taken over the #1 30 caliber rifle sales, use, etc., in part because of the medium action, shorter throw and...of course, the military preference. I have a Steyr bolt gun and a Glen Nelson MI-A Super National Match, heavy barrel. Love 'em both. I just get a little extra muzzle velocity (and energy) out of my '06's...

No doubt about it,the 308 is a superb cartridge too.

It also was the basis of a lot of wildcat cartridges such as the 358 Winchester which is the 35 Whelan "short"

I also adore a 7mm-08. Have one of the Steyrs that Jeff Cooper designed (Scout model maybe?)that can have a traditional "or" long eye relief scope on it. Ragged hole groups.
I plan on continuing "cartridge posts" as, no doubt, there's a lotta' good ones.
Stay Sharp,
Capt. Chris
