Chris -

this company and rifle will change your mind:

One of these is in the future for me. Perhaps the only bolt action to own going forward IMO. They are the shniznit!

I don't think I would go to the 300 Win Mag. I would make the jump to .338 Lapua and be done with it.

I also have a "Hill Country" in 30-06, which is my #1 "go-to" hunting rifle.

I didn't think anyone in my AO had a Chandler. I have had one for quite some time now. 20" fluted. Why in the heck did Chandler use you as subject matter, on what NOT to do?

My 26" is a stainless, fluted Hart barrel. My carbine is not. Col. Chandler, as you already know, used to play a more active role in this accurate game than he presently does. He attended the Lakeland "club" show and we set up together several times, as well as in Birmingham. He "LOVES" Randall knives...Long story short...We did a "deal"...and I "do" know what I'm doing, Crutch...except when it comes to pickin' Randall collectors to hang around with at the Gator show!
Best, Capt. Chris

My experience with the break actions has been nothing but positive
Here is one of my latest, an unmarked barrel from either Bullberry or SSK, chambered in 405 Win wildcat that uses 30-40 Krag brass expanded to straightwall. I located a Lyman #412263 mold that drops a nice 288 gr. bullet

This sounds like what my uncle uses to elk hunt in Montana.
