It would appear that TL was using the two color spacer stacks earlier than RMK, and for whatever reason, presumably ordered that way, RMK offered a variation from the standard r-w & b stacks perhaps in the mid 70's. The shop would do a "custom" stack upon request within reason, but it doesn't seem like you see any prior to that time that were shop done. At least that seems to be the time they started to show up now and again.
It is my understanding that the "option" always was available but not really known and rarely requested. it seems TL did that to differentiate his "plain" knives from standard RMK fare, as his embellished pieces were obvious. I would presume that is what GW did also.
"Bo definitely had an affinity with the r/w/b arrangement, and if you didn't like that, he would let you know that he didn't' approve".
Here are some photos of a knife using spacers attributed to TL as his "signature", and while he used them regularly, and far more than the shop and Gail White who didn't do nearly as many knives, I don't believe they remained solely his as time passed.
red-white spacers, pinned and beveled butt cap, all we might attribute to TL, but It was shop made.
