I agree about the 44 spl but I would go one bigger like a nice single shot 16 ga with the bbl cut back to 18".

I have heard about Laborador retrievers being caught by 'gators in LA while retrieving ducks and that most duck hunters there also bring along a rifle or handgun to hopefully prevent that.
