So, here's what this configuration would look like with Border Patrol shape (except for the stainless mark):

Commando Handle Shape

and I need to think,
a compass for me is also useful as wrist thong,

Okokok, a compass in a knife handle can be used, I'll concede that, in the past I've used a compass for many things, determining site to crest, azimuth of fire,etc... you may could even determine declination, and shoot back azimuths with the handle compass,it's just much easier, to do many more things, with a simple lensatic compass.

Having rambled plenty, I'm pulling for a wrist thong and finger grips.

Capt, with you having been a mariner I'm sure you're a first class navigator. When shooting that azimuth ftom a treestand, do you then go to the point where you believe the animal left the scene, then shoot a back azimuth?

I've used mine many times on a cloudy day to get back to the road I was parked on. Knowing the backsight direction definitely helps on a snowy, cloudy day.

Border Patrol Handle.

I like the compass idea, and I agree with its utility, but it's not essential as I have a US Army lensatic compass that I use which is a permanent part of my gear.

And I like the solid look of the wood handle butt end.
