The Triathlete was first introduced to the Randall community in 1988. There were several different variations being experimented with as there always is in the development of a new product. The earliest variations were in the blade shape, handle and sheath design.

Here is a page copied from "The Green Catalog", printed in 1991, with a few of the very earliest examples, including my recently acquired P-305 Ivory handled knife. (These are also some of the earliest customized examples that are shown)

I'm more interested in that tailors knife, would love to see what the variations are.

Bill, that's a great looking knife. The handle scales add a real sense of "class" to what can be a very stark looking knife. I much prefer the appearance of the Triathelete with scales rather than the 'bare' skeleton knife. Congratulations on a real nice acquisition!

Shelley, I'd also love to see the tailor knife variations. All different in design, or similar enough so that Rhett only photographed the one as examplar? Funny how the tailor knife gets lost on that page from the green catalog as there are so many great knives illustrated.

To tell you the truth, this is one of the pages that I virtually paid no attention to until I started buying these catalog knives.

The one that I truly wish that I had an opportunity to purchase would be the Triathlete in the upper left hand corner with Ivory Micarta scales and Maroon and Amber Micarta button inlays!

I have several Triathletes that are paired with my Model 14-7.5" and Piggyback sheaths, but I honestly wouldn't of had and other interest in owning a plain one by itself.

I sent mine for a stag rehandle with compass and wrist thong to Jim and the boys. Came out fantastic. There are pictures somewhere with a Model 3 as a pair.

Bill,

Great Tri; the scales make the knife!

Shelley,

The Tailor Knife is a much smaller knife, so even when you add scales they are still a very petite knife. Here is a Tailor paired with a Tri with Fossil Mammoth Scales for comparison.
