For one, if the holster sheath dating in the auctions is even somewhat accurate, then the snaps were available long before RMK came into being. As stated, I don't ever recall seeing a HH Heiser snap, named or not, of that style on a sheath supplied to RMK.

I just checked all my Heiser sheaths with the bulk from the 40's, and all the the glove type metal snap of some fashion.

Secondly, and this has been said 1000 times, Maurice Johnson suggested to the Randall's the switch to the baby dot. No where do we see any impetus for Heiser to switch from the brown button to the baby dot, as for all practical purposes they were finished as RMK's sheath maker anyway.

Thirdly, IF, and that is purely fantasy in my opinion, IF HKL had switched to the baby dot, where are all the HKL baby dot sheaths? You mean to tell me there is only one, and disregarding other traits but based solely on snap location and stamp orientation?

If they were gonna switch, why didn't they do so earlier, it is obviously superior to the glove type snap. Why didn't they use them in WWII? When brown buttons ran out of stock on occasion? They always seem to use the glove type on sheaths.

Good hunting by the way Tom.

I stand corrected Ronnie, so now you can stop the presses. Here is the snap on the auction sheath. I think this may be the first I have seen on a Heiser knife sheath, or at least took the time to notice. It must be later than my WWII version. Notice that the male portion on this type is different than the baby dot Johnson used.

I'll answer this again Joe. Baby dots come in two sizes.....small and large. As far as Heiser not being set up for Baby Dots. Well maybe not a machine but it doesn't take a machine. Baby dots are easy to set with basic tools out of ones tool box.
Thanks for posting the photo of the snap.

Tom,
That wrap-around holster has been repaired and probably re-snapped. Check out the "extra" hole where the strap was once (originally) held.
Best, Capt. Chris

Captain,

Yep, I saw that extra hole in the strap, but I posted another Heiser holster with the same snap and they both have the Heiser logo on top. Original or replaced, Heiser installed the snap.

Extra hole doesn't mean re-snapped.

Joe, I agree, the male portion of that snap does not look like a baby dot. Here's a clear shot of the male portion of another holster snap. This one looks more like a baby dot. Link

Tom -

that one still looks different, a multi-piece male portion. Looks like the center part is crimped or rolled into the base.

Ronnie,
I know it doesn't guarantee a re-snap, hence "probably". When an original strap is extended the reason is usually because, at one end or the other, it has cracked or split. I wasn't doubting the fact that the work was done at Heiser. It just could have been repaired at a much later date...or not, but leather usually holds up for several years. Heiser leather goods would probably hold up for "quite" a few years.
Best, Capt. Chris
