Peter...and all others:
Rick T. and I are going to start the photo contest real soon. Like many things, it takes a bit of time (and footwork) to get these things going. I agree that these are great photos. The contest will feature Randall knives of course.
Best, Capt. Chris

Tom--

Neat photos and props! It all looks practical and well kept.

What is the compass? Looks like something that many of us would be interested in if there is a brand or source for it?

Also, what is the caliber of the rifle?

Thanks,
Larry

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the comments.

The compass was made by Marbles - solid brass, 1" diameter, dry construction, mid 90s vintage, made in Michigan. The Marbles compass has been in and out of production for 100 years. Within the last few years, someone bought the Marbles brand knife and compass line and now both lines are made in China. The Chinese compass is still brass, but it is liquid filled and not very good quality. Best thing to do is find an older Marbles compass on eBay or go with a Trunord. I don't own a Trunord, but I read a lot of good things about them.

The rifle is a Weatherby Safari .300WM.

All leatherwork was made by me. Most is trimmed with elephant hide. The K&M Matchcase is another neat item and it's made in Idaho. Your choice - brass or aluminum. Actually, they come with a liquid filled compass in the cap, but I replaced it with elephant hide.

Sorry to blab. blush

Tom--

No wonder I liked the compass. I think I have seen your posts about compasses in the past.

And the match case is on my wish list. If I recall, they are made by the one man and his wife, so I better get in gear and send in an order.

I shot deer and an elk with the .300 WinMag, and it is a stopper. I suspect the Weatherby Mag reaches out a bit further with a flatter trajectory.

Nice that you took the time to share with us.

Larry

Duke, your photos are just fine. I'm not a Case collector, but your knife is set up similar to mine. Do you know the pattern?

Needless to say, scales don't get much better than that.

For no other reason than to entertain myself during our recent stretch of crappy Indiana weather, I decided to take a group photo of my safari collection and add it to this thread. No comments needed.

Tom I have to say that is a nice collection! You are a very skilled leather worker!

Have you been to Africa on safari? The only thing your missing is some Russell Moccasin PH boots!

Thanks Ben. I have been to Africa twice, but only on photo safaris. I have always wanted to hunt plains game, but disposable income became scarce after our children were born. My love for Africa is now quenched by Capstick books, documentaries, and amateur leather work. I am the most authentic arm chair adventurer you will ever meet. grin

BTW, I have Clark desert boots, but I'm familiar with Russell and they're fine boots.
