For Home Defense, a G34 with a Surefire X300 attached is about perfect. Holsters for guns with lights attached are available from most makers. I like Safariland's ALS series. Like a #6377-683-131 for example. (I think I got the numbers right, mine has a different middle number for the G19)

I CCW a G19, and I also used to be certified as a Glock Armorer, but let it lapse.

Great guns--though if you're new to handguns, I personally wouldn't recommend one as your first gun because they do not have a manual safety. I have a second generation 19, third generation 27, and fourth generation 17.....all great guns (and extremely accurate). They have had some issues with the fourth generation guns (Model 17 and 19)--specifically, feeding issues and brass kicking back at your face--enough problems that Glock has issued new recoil spring assemblies, ejectors, and extractors....make sure you get an updated gun (with updated part numbers). If you visit GlockTalk.com and do a search, you'll learn all about it......and more.

Pappy,
Glock is very good gun,I still own a Glock 36..Have had 19-23-20
That would be 45-9-40-10 Respectfully.I like the feel of the Gen 4
better than Gen 3,but like Doug said they had some problems with Gen 4..Police in my area went to 22 Gen 4 and had to have all guide
rods replaced to operate properly.I used to shoot IDPA with my 19 and 23..Good luck finding what suits you.

I really appreciate you all taking the time to give me your information learned on the Glock. I see where the #34 has a longer barrel than the #17 and a lighter trigger pull. Does the longer barrel have an effect on the shell ejection? Does the recoil spring problem on the newer #17 version also a concern on the #34? I will also lurk on the Glock forum. Thanks-

Pap

Pappy,The 34 has a longer slide than the 17,some have fixed sights
some with adjustable, some with 51/2 lb trigger some with 31/2 lb
trigger(depends on where you live).Slide is ported(weight reduction)larger mag release.lonnger sight radius,less muzzle flip
than 19 or 26.Heavier grain bullet like 147 also reduces muzzle flip.you should not have any problems with shell ejection.
They make the 34 in the Gen 4 also, supposely all problems have been
fixed.....

What can I expect to pay for a #17 or a #34 within reason? Thanks-

You might consider joining the Glock Shooting Sports Foundation (GSSF)--$35 for new members and $25 annually to renew. After being a member for 1-year, you are entitled to a Glock Pistol Purchase Coupon (one every year) enabling you to purchase a Blue Label Glock @ law enforcement prices. You just want to make sure you have a dealer in your general location that participates in the program--if you call GSSF (they will not provide the list via email) they will ask where you live and give you a list of participating dealers. I purchased my new Blue Label Glock 17 (4th gen) for $375 and the Blue Label Glocks include 3 magazines. Unfortunately, they now make you wait 1 year before you get your first coupon, so it doesn't benefit you immediately. Personally, I really like the 4th gen Glocks--they have interchangeable backstraps, updated texturing on the grip, and an updated recoil spring assembly that noticeably reduces the recoil.

I currently have my second coupon--and plan on purchasing a Glock 21 (.45 ACP).

Here is a current price list for law enforcement personnel (and GSSF members). I purchased my Glock 17 from Ed's Public Safety (looks like their prices have increased just a little) in Georgia. Unfortunately, GSSF now limits the list to dealers in your "general vicinity"....so make sure you call GSSF before joining.

Very interesting indeed. I just joined the GSSF for 5 years. Also, do the extended magazines listed for the #17 also fit the #34? I see alot of optional equipment and mods listed for the #17 but not the #34, but except for the longer barrel, I am assuming the stuff for the #17 also works on the #34.

Mike, it's my understanding that most of the mods that you would want to do to the 17 can be done on the 34. Yes, 17 mags will work in the 34. If you want a good comparison of the differences you could always go to the Glock website. They have a lot of info and a comparison chart that will help. You also might check out the website: Glocktalk.com, they have very knowledgeable people on it.
