Great article in the October Knife magazine on the history of the Woodman's Pal, including the military survival kits. While not used as often in the boreal north, the Pal is almost a necessity in the eastern and southern states. The Pal is many times better than a machete or even an axe. With the sharp hook portion, you can cut through brush, vines and briars with ease. When I worked as a young forester, in the woods marking timber every day, I wouldn't be without my Woodman's Pal. I gave each of my grandsons one for their 12th birthday. If you've never had one, you might consider trying a Pal on your next forest adventure.
