On a Tennessee boar hunt some years ago, my friend insisted on hunting with a .41 Magnum. (I don't know if it is still going on, but there was a bit of side-taking re: .41 versus .44 at the time, and my friend had made his choice.)

He shot a hog from the side at close range, but it started to run away until the guide shot it with his rifle.

I suspect that ammo is much improved by now, but think that his shot placement is what failed to drop it.
