Tricks aside...

I once knew an SF soldier who demonstrated how he carried a balisong and used it. Growing up in the Philippines he developed proficiency carrying one of these knives in his right hip pocket. He could quickly pull the knife, flip it open, and throw it underhand to hit a target at close range, all in a fluid motion. He said he had lost a favorite balisong one night in South Vietnam when he had to flip it and stick it in an attacking VC in the dark, with the man then running away.
