Only had contact with him one time, at the 1988 Knifemakers Guild Show in Orlando, Fl. but Pete Gerber was a giant in the knife community and I still have a couple of "Gerbers"...and use them! Pete passed away yesterday.
I came up, to attend the Guild show, from the Palm Beaches where I lived at the time. Bo had been invited back to set up in celebration of RMK's 50th anniversary. I stopped by the shop to see if they needed any help, setting up or manning the booth and stuck my head in to congratulate Bo in his office. Gary was at his desk and so was Bo but he was busy with 3 other men.
I told Gary I would see all of them at the show and congratulate his Father on the 50th. Gary said to me: Yeah...He's kind of busy right now as Chuck Buck, Al Mar and Pete Gerber stopped by.
I took a look at all 4 men and thought to myself: "I bet there's been a couple of knives made by that foursome"! The show was a blast and I met and spoke with all of the legends over that remarkable weekend! I shall never forget it.
This is, I know, "back in the day" when The Knifemakers Guild was a big deal and the show was spectacular! I miss those days and will miss the men who have left us now. Bo Randall, Pete Gerber, Frank Centofante and by personal friend, Don (Zack) Zaccagnino! (Zack was at my wedding)
So to Pete and in remembrance of all, I bid you "Fair Winds"!

Respectfully submitted,
Captain Chris Stanaback
