I made $440 a month in Feb. 1980 as an E-1. Jimmy Carter gave the armed forces a huge raise when he exited office. So by Feb. 1981, I was making $575 as an E-3. 3 hots and a cot, I only needed money for toiletries, dry cleaners and the Package store. I was the bank back then.
