You mentioned Hilton Head. One of Miss Deb's neighbor's in her springtine condo complex was walking his German Shepard on the banks of the creek out back. A big gator attacked the dog; the neighbor was also bit severly in the leg before the gator drowned the dog. The neighbor died a week later from sepsis.
