With wood being able to be dyed & the stabilization processes of today, there are a lot more options for color.
So I would guess that color plus no import fees, I.E cheaper.
Most of the wood that is all that is bought on set up day at blade. Last year all the Spalted wood & the hard to get types bigger than 1 inch square were gone early.

Not certain if ebony is sort of an endangered wood species these days. It was a shop offering if you research the older catalogs.

Yes it does as I can attest to. It's very dense like Snakewood and Lignum Vitae; all will sink in water.

This one doesn't have a crack I can find.
I figured 1958, 59, I guess it could go another year one way or the other. One of my very favorite shapes for a model 2. I'll work on some more and better pics tomorrow.

#3,4,7,8 and 11 are Micarta.
1and 2 are WW2 leather.
5 is ivory.
6 is pinecone.
9 is rosewood
10 is Ebony.
Across the bottom, leather.
