The news is reporting that on Saturday, Colorado experienced its first ever derecho.
Uh, what's that?

A derecho is a line of intense, widespread and fast-moving windstorms and sometimes thunderstorms that moves across a great distance and is characterized by damaging winds.

Seems like 100+ mph winds slamming down from the Niwot Ridge near Boulder is a similar experience. Colorado gets those a few times each year.

Following up, I find

In the last year or two, nonmeteorologists have been introduced to the terms bomb cyclone and snow squall.

And now Colorado has experienced another rare weather phenomenon — derecho, pronounced de-REY-cho. Derechos are more commonly found in the Midwest.

I worked for NOAA in the early 70's as a weather researcher, studying hail and thunderstorms. First time I have heard this term.

I had never heard of a derecho either until we experienced one here at our home 6 years ago, about 4:00 pm on a Saturday afternoon. It is still the only time I've insisted my family all go to our basement. Straight line winds here were clocked at 115 mph, and no advance warning. I was outside telling my 16 year old son bye as he backed the Durango out of the driveway, felt winds suddenly pick up and the sky look weird. Honestly just sensed things weren't right. Nothing like making a teenage boy cancel a date with his sweetheart and then huddle with him in the basement. The winds sounded like a jet, even in my basement. Seven large old oaks came down on all four sides of our home, branches from two brushing the house and one 12 feet away and we never heard them fall. What a pile of firewood. How blessed we felt.

Had a similar experience back in the 1970's, fortunately the trees fell on either side of me on a forest road, and I had a chain saw, but still very, very scary.

Had one a few years ago in central Ohio, during rush hour.

It was blowing from the north-northwest. Blew tractor-trailers over on the interstate no problem

A stretch of power lines on wood poles blew over onto a north-south road filled with people after work. People trapped in their cars with live wires, one man killed.

They made sure to replace the line using concrete poles.

That being said, tomorrow I'm installing a Generac generator system with a 500 gallon propane tank that will run my whole log home for 30 days. Our power has been off 3 times already this year, but no more. With Lucille's situation, I'm tired of it. 2 years ago, there was a trailer that caught fire because of a flat tire, and burned 6 power poles leading to our community, and we were out 4 days. Should add to our home appraisal as well. Excited about it.

Pap, I had a natural gas 17k generac Installed 12 years ago. We lose power on average of 4 times a year. Some outages go for 4-5 days. I have never regretted installing it. I set mine to run 15 mins. every Wed. At 1 PM for maintenance. I change the oil every other year. Check on the battery every 3 years.
