That is a real nice 26, one of my favorites and I have several including a few L.L. Bean specials. I have the first one Bean sold #2, #1 is at the Randall shop.

Partly the size of the material, also seeing what shaped handle they think the material will do.
Also part of it is you learning the material do's and don'ts so that when you buy the material it has a better than average chance of shop approval.
It helps to learn if it's a left or right FWI tusk, plus learning about how deep the color is will influence the way you order the knife.
damn to wordy picture of FWI end inserted here...this piece made knife in next post, can go on if you are still interested just ask.
The ones above don't have super deep color like this piece in the picture, so best to not shape it & just a butt plate on the end.

Able to have a border patrol handle cause the pith center was so small.

(Not Chief, but I think I know what he means...)

The shop won't do any ol' "CW" material that comes in. First you have size requirements depending on the blade (there's a sheet floating around). Second, they may have other concerns, like "stabilized pinecone" being too fragile, buffalo horn not taking the epoxy, etc.

So when you have something in your hand that you'd like to consider, it's best to have the shop take a look at it before committing it to a build.

Pretty close.....but only if you walk in with one piece fine. The shop isn't gonna be happy if you send them pieces and ask them to tell you what it will make.

As long as Ruana has been using elk horn, I'm surprised that the shop hasn't at least tried it on slabs. I've had Ruana's since 1965, and none have cracked. Just a thought, not a complaint.

LOL they will just send it back to you.

Now the true trick to this is to talk to the Captain, Duke, Gary Clinton and learn about how to pick this stuff.
Other wise you will have a pile that won't make any Randall knife.
Like the desk ornament in the picture, That Scott And Duke advised me not to buy that I now own.
