Bladesnbarrels,
If memory serves me correctly,my base pay in '64 was $83 and jump pay was an extra $106 a month. Combat pay was also $106. But I could be wrong.

Duke,
I remember that Good Gulf regular went for 20.9 cents a gallon.
Jiffy burgers were 15 cents and phone calls were nickel.

A box of 22 shorts went for 30 cents and a packet of what was then called Thunderbolts (27 rounds to a "chicklet type" box went for 25 cents.

Gas was only 33 cents at regular price when there was no gas wars going on! Cokes were a dime and 15 cent burgers were the norm!

You are right.
I was talking about E-1 net pay during boot camp.
After boot camp, I went to E-3 on the college program, and then off to hazardous duty pay.
I didn't draw much for the next couple of years, just enough for odds and ends. Saved enough after 4 1/2 years to buy a car and tour the country, and cover 1st year's college tution when I got out.
I do remember the $35 a month though (I had a job at over $100 a month when I went in)

BnB,
Now the pay is much better in the military and if I am not mistaken,re-enlistment bonus is $40,000!!!!

Back in the day, volunteers and draftees were treated the same, like lowly conscripts, pretty much throw away pieces of trash.

Seems that things are much better.

But this is now drifting off the main issue of this thread.

I added this period Heiser flowered holster from the 40's. Makes a nice package with the elk horn grips.

Thanks guys. I've had the Heiser holster for 20 years, and tried to sell it on this forum a few years ago but no bites. Got to thinking that it might fit my Smith 10-8, and it fit perfect.

Pappy,
Looks like you kind of planned ahead by getting the holster first, then a gun to fit it!!!

Excellent job!!

That Heiser holster brought memories flooding back of an old departed friend.
On one of my holidays I took a trip over to see Dubie Baxter at Winter Haven,he gave me a real show n tell with a bunch of Heiser holsters and belts that looked just like the one pictured in this thread.
I miss the old guy.
