OK members,
I know we have a build going on over on BMK's forum and I don't want to mess with that..."BUT"...Here's the "deal":
TK & I are headed out in the early morning hours on Wednesday, November 6th to set up at the Wannenmacher's Tulsa Arms Gun & Knife Show! This is the largest gun show in the world! It also affords me the opportunity to "shop" for handle material...just like I do at The Blade Show.
What I'm proposing here is that we do a "Tulsa Build" with a piece of hand-select (literally) handle material that I pick up at the show! I just want to know one thing: ROLL CALL VOTE!!! Are you:
A) "IN"
B) "OUT"
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: A typical Tulsa set=up...CCS

OK Everybody,
Here goes! I promised to fetch up some handle material at the most recent Tulsa show so we could build a one-of-a-kind Randall knife. You'll notice 3 examples, shown below. Unfortunately, I could only find material of proper size to build 3/16" stock knives but it's nice stuff, never-the less:
Left-to-right:
A) Red Mallee
B) Pink Ivory
C) Cocobola
The last build consisted of 2 Model #8's, one standard and one old style. Those knives should be completed within the next 90 days, FYI. I hope we can agree on a way-cool RMK to build with one of these examples.
This build will be a little different. At the end, anyone getting in will simply add their name to the list. I will assign numbers, starting at #1 and continuing until all names have a corresponding number. The Random Draw (computer search) will determine which number (Crew member) will have the choice to purchase this knife...or not?? I will chose "3" names.
Also" Anyone bringing in a new crew member will get an additional number. If a couple of crew members feel energetic and want to go the extra mile, by signing up "5" new members, their name will go in the hat for a way-cool door prize also to be given away.
1st things 1st: Let's vote for one of these great examples of their species of wood, thanks.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris
ROLL CALL VOTE!! Vote for one and one "ONLY"!
A) Red Mallee
B) Pink Ivory
C) Cocobola

Yo Captain. Seems like lately there has been more interest and participation when it's a raffle build. Just tossing that out there. I'm good either way.

I don't think we'll sell enough numbers Jim. If somebody doesn't want to buy it, they can still participate in the build and then bow out for the drawing this way..."BUT"...I'm totally flexible, either way.

One thing to think about is if we all go for a raffle and in the end, the total raffle amount doesn't cover the total cost, the winner could pick up the difference, which would still be way less than the total cost.

OK, I'm in.

Even though the pink ivory looks to be the favorite, that Cattleman on the other thread has some pretty ironwood, which makes me think Capt. Chris's cocobolo is real nice.

I will vote for cocobolo, but would be happy with either.

I kinda like Pap’s idea. More work for you Capt., but (I think) it makes the raffle more fun, given the chance to get a nice knife at a reduced price

OK Crew:
With 13 votes in, thus far, we have a 12-1 decided vote for PINK IVORY! That's what we will go with. I appreciate the support for this build and hope we can swell the numbers during the build. Remember: Ya' can't have at it unless you participate!
On to the next order of business. This piece measures just a tad over 1" in diameter x 4 1/2" in length. This will meet the requirements for almost all RMKs with a blade material of 3/16". There should be a couple of exclusions that I have found, over quite a bit of time building these things, that should not be considered. They are:
* Model #11's
* Model #22-4 5/8"
* #6-9", Large Filet
These models sport a more robust blade shape and depth and I believe this wonderful piece of pink ivory would yield a handle too smallish to be compatable with them.
So...As is usually the case, let's talk it out, express our preferences and decide what we're going to undertake!
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Your #3 choice was a #6-9. So that's not on the table?

Suggestion--maybe jumping the gun.

Model 7, either blade length, Stainless Steel, Model 6 blade grind, NS Hilt, Black and Aluminum, Wrist Thong, Duralumin Butt Cap.

Handle shape? Not sure what the stick of wood will accommodate, but on the smaller knife it might allow any of the shapes.

I think the option for the Model 6 grind is no charge?

I like the idea of the model 2, but more along the lines of 6" or 7".

Rob,
4" or 5" are doable (3/16" stock). Anything longer? Not-so-much (1/4" stock).

Somehow I've missed this thread being re-opened and would like to participate . I think the #2-5" would be great.
Thanks for opening up another great Build.

My bad, missed the "3/16" stock only" note.

If we can CW a Model 22, I think that would be nice.

Aluminum/Red spacers, square hilt, WT.

Read Rob...#22 is on the no-fly-list! Too broad!
#11, #6-9" and #22 at least won't work. This material is too small.

OK Crew,
Welcome Duke. Let's have a "ROLL CALL VOTE"! Vote for one of the following: Let's build:
A) Model #2-4" or #2-5" (to be determined later)
B) Model #4-4 1/2"
C) Model #5-4"
D) Model #6-4 1/2"
E) Model #7-4 1/2" or 5" (to be determined later)
F) Model #8-4" or #8-4"-Old Style (to be determined later)
G) Model #21-3 1/2"
H) Model #24-4"
I) Model #26-4"
J) GTR Special
K) Denmark Special
L) Small Gambler
M) Cattleman
A lot to consider...and the "TOP 3" will go on to the general election afterwards but these choices will work well with this particular piece if pink ivory.
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: Remember Crew: If you don't participate ya' can't get in on this knife...Thx, CCS

Thanks for listing them ALL side-by-side Chris, so that I can lay down the catalog & stop flipping pages. What a bunch of "loser" choices to pick from.....NOT!!!
I want all of 'em. Might as well put 'em on my dart board to help choose.
BUT,.....
B) Model #4-4&1/2"
And I'll be happy to list all of my reasons later, if needed.

Maybe...Perhaps..TOO many choices? I was just trying to establish which models the pink ivory would work on...and give you all the options. Hopefully, 3 will prevail. If not...maybe we'll vote on which models we "don't want"...just sayin...

OK Crew,
I see a couple of models which have zero votes. Several models have 1 vote only but only "3" have multiple votes. We are moving on. New vote coming up...and thanks for being so prompt in voting.
Any of these choices would make a very nice RMK. Please: ROLL CALL VOTE!! ONE KNIFE ONLY per member...and feel free to argue your case and influence the others to your side! (That's half the fun)
Best, Capt. Chris
A) Model #2 in 4" or 5" blade length (to be determined later)
B) Model #5-4"
C) GTR Special

OK Crew,
Just sat down to my desk after a 2-day marathon trip to the woods to pick up my venison from the processors. I have tallied up the vote and The A)-#2 and the B) Model #5-4" are both tied with 5 votes each. The GTR is close behind but in third, if you will...and Tom: Cattleman was eliminated earlier...sorry.
So...If there are no objections, I think we should vote between the 2 tied at the top and come up with the knife we're going to build so we can move on...What say you? While there can be great arguments made for a #2 or a small #5, I'll leave it up you crew members to "sway-as-you-will! (I know which one I'd chose...but I'm just the wrench...not the driver!
............"ROLL CALL VOTE".............VOTE FOR "1"!

A) Model #2-4" or #2-5" (to be determined later)
B) Model #5-4"
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Thanks for the votes. This time the #5-4" won out. I hope all of those "other choice choosers" will stick around and participate. As for the build: We are building:
* RMK Model #5-4 inch, Small Camp & Trail Model!
Standard this knife comes in carbon steel, "with" thumb notches, a brass single hilt, red, white & blue spacers, a stag handle and a Model "B" sheath in tan leather. There is no room on the sheath's front panel to add a hone pocket so that's out of the running.
Now then. How are we going to trick this pony? Let me hear your thoughts?
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Is a 22 crow's beak available on a 5-4? Never seen one.

Since we’re using the pink ivory for the handle, I’d suggest a single NS hilt, with red and aluminum spacers. Cap’n — does the size of the ivory you have limit us to a “standard” handle shape ( I’m thinking a 22 handle with a crow’s beak butt cap....)?

Since stag is standard, maybe the Captain's CW would not count as an Option?

I would opt for Stainless.

This piece of pink ivory, being the shop's minimum size for this knife, would not be a good candidate for a #22 handle shape as there just isn't enough there there!
Also: CW, regardless of the original handle material "is/counts" as an option.
How about we decide if we want:
* Carbon
....or....
* Stainless
for the blade material?
Let's hear it, Capt. Chris

Good morning Crew:
By a vote of 9-4 a stainless steel blade wins! Thumb notches are standard. Pink ivory wooden handle has been decided. So...What's next?
We still need to decide upon the spacers (or collar) and a butt cap, butt plate or neither, along with a wrist thong or compass. Still a ways to go including other option possibilities (HILT)? (SHEATH)?
Any ideas?
Best, Capt. Chris

Mel's arrangement might look nice with this wood:

Brass hilt
Brass and red spacers
Compass
wrist thong

With the CW and stainless, this would use up the five options.

The black sheath would be optional for me, maybe let the winner decide if they want it?

From the images I’ve seen on-line for pink ivory handles, I think a NS hilt with aluminum and red spacers is the way to go.

Wonder if the stick will allow a bit of Commando handle shaping? That would give a better grip.

Thanks for all the input and I, just to troll against the tide, agree with REK. Nickel silver looks great with pink ivory...and ya'll "KNOW" I don't care what we build. Brass hilt with brass spacers (I would go brass & black) only uses up one option, a plus to consider as well.
Weekend's coming to an end soon and on Monday night we'll see the flow and move on. It looks like a brass hilt is leading...
Thanks, Capt. Chris
PS: Larry" I can request a handle shape but it will be minute if they agree at all...CCS

I think the warmth of the brass and red/brass spacers

Without a butt cap, we really get ALL the wood!

Same as Tony.

It is a small knife, no need for a butt cap to balance blade weight.

And the colors should be attrative together.

Once ya decide on which Randall, all the options are just personal preference;
can give all kinda' reasons BUT, it's really just "I like this/that 'cause I like this/that". So
WT.....please
Black NH Sheath........& heck, I'm color blind, so pink is a pale shade of gray and black is a very dark shade of the same; really makes no never mind to me.

WT.

Compass. It would be on the butt, and not detract from the wood looking at the knife side-on.

Also, the black sheath would make the wood stand out, and does not count as an option on the knife.

This has shaped up as a nice package either way.

Same is true of a butt cap but people seemed to be concerned about that. No big deal for me either way.

The problem with "just letting the winner chose" is that it delays the finished build by 2 months. I have to submit specs next week & had scheduled this knife to be on those specs.
Here's some "factoids" for everyone to ponder:
A) No compass requests, strictly to preserve nice wood on the end of pink ivory (which has very little grain to admire), is counter-productive!
B) Adding the compass increases the pricing on this build by an additonal $35.00!
..."&"...Ya'll know I don't care what we build..."BUT"...we are tied right now..."Will one good man please step forward?" (President Ronald Reagin)
Just Sayin',
Capt. Chris

Compass it is. Here's the final build (knife-wise):
Model #5-4"
* Thumb notches
* Stainless
* Brass single hilt
* Brass & red spacers
* CW (Pink Ivory)
* Wrist thong
* Compass installed

....Now then: Sheath? Vote for one and one only!

1) Tan leather (standard)
2) Waxed leather (option/chargeable)
3) Black leather (option/chargeable)

Thanks, Capt. Chris

Thanks for the vote Crew:
Black is the winner by majority vote. The knife has already been booked and will be here in about 7 months! Now...Money??
Depending upon which vote I tally and depending upon who wants in, we have "up to" 15 crew members who have participated in this build. The knife will be charged as follows:
* Model #5-4"- $405.00
* Stainless- $65.00
* Brass spacers-$25.00
* CW Install- $30.00
* Wrist thong- $35.00
* Compass- $35.00
* Black sheath- $35.00
* Total costs- $630.00
...I am donating the pink ivory or this knife would run about $35.00 more. THAT means: This knife is "under" catalog price! Here's what I need from you all now: IN...or OUT??
RSVP: Name and position on this. After I hear from you crew members, I'll figure out the total each will have to submit for the raffle. No numbers this time, just Crew Names in the hat!
Thanks for your help with a great build, Capt. Chris

Sorry to see so many opting out. I have revised the price of this knife because..."IF" the knife comes standard with a stag handle, the upcharge for CW is only $30.00...not $80.00. If this might make a difference in your thinking it is ok to change your post or re-post.
Stay sharp, Capt. Chris

Thus far only "5" are "in the hat". That would mean over $100 each for the drawing. This was youze-guys idea. STILL want to go on with it?
Let me know, Capt. Chris

Capt. Chris--

A suggestion.

Do a drawing and let the winner buy the knife outright.

Might be more appealing than plunking down $100 in the hope of being drawn and maybe getting a bargain.

I agree. This one might be best done "the old way."

Ok...Ok...
Here's the deal. "We" start a build one way. We vote on options, just like we have always done. We are now down to a third of the participants "because" of the initial "start" of the build being geared to finish one way and, in reality, the majority is now "out"!
Here's what "I'm" going to do and there's no vote on this one because I'm on my last nerve with this. I will post photos of the finished build and "anyone" who still wants in can get in...for as "much" as they care to get in for will be able to, so long as they participated in the build. We will have a 100 number raffle, just like the old days @ $6.00 per chance of 5 for $25.00. If we don't sell "ALL" 100 #'s everyone gets their money back and the knife will get listed on my website.
"That" should be pleasing enough for everyone, I hope.
Best, Capt. Chris
PS: in 6-7 months time we shall see...CCS

I dropped out because I was not willing to pay much more that $50 for a raffle entry and it looked like it was going to be more than that based on the small number of folks opting in for the raffle. But, I thought if not enough people were in for a raffle style deal then we would go back to the old style where whoever gets their number picked buys the knife at 100% of the selling price. Whatever. It's all good.

When the knife is here, in hand, I will post several photos on this thread..."THEN"...we'll see how many want a shot at it. That way:
A) I'm not "holding" anybody's $$$
B) I'll know if this'll fly or I have to start the refund process. Either way: It will be a short window...
Best, Capt. Chris
