Ok, moving on to Home Defense gun…

My main home defense weapon is a Mossberg 590A1 Tactical. Love this shotgun. Holds 8+1 and another 4 in the stock—13 rds. ready to rock from get-go, with no additional bandolier or case. And I love the Ghost Ring sights. Keep it behind my bedroom door.

And in my nightstand drawer it’s forever been my Glock 22 (.40 cal), in a holster with a 2nd magazine. (When I got this Gen 2 gun, back in 1990, it was the fricking bee’s knees—just about every law enforcement agency was moving to it. Now it’s as passé as a drive-in theater. But I still love it, have put thousands of rds. through it, and it’s never failed or jammed once in all those years).

And we have a few guns in hidden but accessible places here and there.

But the main go-to is the shotgun. And for the most part, I like #4 Buck for home def.

Underwood M1 carbine in aftermarket folding stock, ultimak rail clamped to barrel, Leupold red-dot sight on the rail.

Stupid easy to put the red triangle on the target, day or night.

By my front door is a Ruger Mini 14 and a Remington 1100 Tactical depending on the situation.

The 1100 has a VERY bright tactical flashlight attached and the buckshot pattern follows the light beam very closely. (6ft diameter at 50 yds.)

By my bed is a Ruger Security Six in .357 Magnum.

I hope that I never ever have to use any of them.

You are ready to throw down some lead at the front door there, Coach. Nice.

I love the Mini 14, always have. I can't come up with a good reason for never having finally purchased one.

I've got the M1A and my M1 Garand and a couple of its little brothers, 10/22s, and I love the looks of the Mini 14, esp. with the wood furniture. But each time I came close, I ended up going with another AR.

Maybe soon.

You are right!!!

I just worry that some kid at school might get “ignorant” one night and do something really stupid. I hope to goodness that those two Hound Dogs on the porch will discourage that from happening.

I figure though, if those two don’t discourage, I do need to take action.

Gary:

I have to also worry about hogs rooting up my yard, breaking pipes, etc. My Mini 14 is loaded with Hog Hammers for them.

I live a half mile off the highway back in the woods WITH the hogs.

The big hogs are nasty.

If I can catch a sow with little pigs in my trap, the pigs are really good. You have to feed them cow milk and cracked corn for 3-4 weeks.

Then dress them like you would a squirrel, and them smoke them whole in the smoker.

Winter is best, especially right after a hard freeze. Hot Summertime like we are having right now is out of the question.

When I was a 10-year-old kid WWII had not been over but about 14 or 15 years. Our downtown was our playground including the Army-Navy store.

There was a plethora of WWII war surplus. I remember a barrel of M-1 Carbine folding stocks. We would grab one and run around the store pretending to fire at each other. Mr. O'Kelly was OK with that as long as we put the stocks back in the barrel before we left.

If I remember correctly the price of those stocks was $5.00.

I did have an original M-1 Carbine paratrooper I bought in a silent auction from our local historical society that had been donated by a big collector. I have since moved it on to someone that wanted it more than I did.

I'm just gonna say it makes me feel lucky to live here. Bout our only issue is one of the neighbors cows that apparently didn't know what an electronic fence is or cared. One poop on Deb's tennis court would be interesting LOL. Under the circumstances this our only property intruder and the case was settled without incident.
So I see Coach has a wild animal property issue. I'd have at least what he has and possibly more. But I worry about where some of you guys live looking at what you need for protection. Again, I feel very safe here. Not so for others around our country.

With all of the Meth and the Opioids out there, bad stuff could happen just about anywhere.

Nobody in their right mind would come down to my place unannounced, but “right mind “ is the key.

(warning, long story follows)

I bought this Underwood (and a couple of others) from the last CMP Great Carbine sale. By the time I got into it, all of the Service Grades were gone, so Rack Grade or worse for me. The Underwood was the last one I got, they ran dry before my "foldin' money" filled up enough to get another. When I got it, the stock was all shriveled up, like "they" (where ever it came from) packed it in dirt road dust. It even had that "dirt road dust" color.

I decided that I'll work on restoring the wood "soon" (which hasn't happened yet), but in the meanwhile get one of those cheap-ish aftermarket paratrooper stocks. After that arrived, it evolved into what it is today.

First time I took it to the range, all kinds of FTF and stove-piping. I took it home and gave it a thorough cleaning, pulling funky stuff from every nook and cranny.

Next time at the range, it ran perfect, banging away with Agula ammo in 15rnd magazines with nary a problem.

For that range-day, took the BHP (Israeli Police turn-in), 1942 "byf" Luger, Hi-Standard target pistol, and this M1 Carbine. I let the two boys (now 21 and 28) and a friend of the older son have time with each. The Carbine was by far the favorite.

It would be nice to find a barrel of surplus Carbine parts again, but that market is long gone, sadly. Hell, can't even get surplus M16A1/M16A2 parts these days.

Mic,
Nice set up you have there.

I like the Mossberg pump guns. In my opinion they are better than the recent productions of the Remington 870.

The 870s now are no where near the quality of the older models.

My favorite for the HD is the Mossberg Shock-Wave.

I was an 870 user for my entire career as a LEO, but being left handed, I found that the Mossbergs worked better for me. I recently got a chance to shoot a Shockwave and I liked it. I think it would work well in close quarters.

For forty years, our issued shotguns were 870s and they were still going strong when I retired.

I found that shooting the Shock-Wave (Mossberg) required I use the "push pull hold" to help negate the modest recoil.

This 870 has been my Jeep gun for 35 years. My brother-in-law was manager of our TG&Y store back in the early '80s. He called me one day and said the store was closing and firearms were being marked down. He put this one under the counter for me. After work I went by and picked it up for about $70, maybe less. It was a long time ago.
I put the extended mag, Pachmayr Vindicator grips on it, had the barrel cut to 18.25", bead blasted and re-blued. BAM....Jeep gun!

Tom,
Nice set up there. I like the way that you have the extended magazine supported.

I have never seen a pump action shotgun either worn or shot out.

They just keep on chugging and shooting right along.

Pap,

Two schools of thought.

1. Rack the slide to put them on notice that life is short.

2. Rack the slide and give away your location.

I go with option 1.

Yo Tom
I was with the police reserve in McCall, Idaho in the late 1970's, and the City cops had a drug sting going with the Idaho State Police. There was a knife stabbing at a local bar and the perp was in the men's rest room. Me and the local Cop went into the packed bar. The patrons wouldn't let us pass, until my partner racked his 870 and the waters parted. We arrested the perp, got his dope and he went to jail. McCall is a destination summer recreation center for SW Idaho. I was with the McCall Police Reserve for 6 years and spent many volunteer hours patrolling. Enjoying them all.

For my short time working for the Forest Service near Yellowstone, I was the designated law enforcement representative and had camp ground duty during all holiday weekends. Fortunately I had radio contact with the local Sheriff and State Police, but was only armed with a flashlight. The rowdy campers called me Smokey The Pig. It was that experience that got me on with the McCall Police Reserve.
