That's a good question. I haven't seen oak, pecan or hickory used as a handle material either. Walnut, Osage Orange, sycamore and so on, show up, but not the oaks. Must be a cracking issue.

We have used (or at least, I have) spalted pecan and sycamore in the past.

It all depends on the processing of oak, it unfortunately,
often cracked due to temperature and humidity changes.
And it's still bad to make hilt of complex shape - SFG and FG,
in the case where the fibers are straight (as on lignum vitae).
Here the fibers are curved, everything will be fine smile
