What is stamped on the back of the sheath? Mine is stamped with the standard Randall sheath stamped, as well as the capital letters "DP". Dave Griffin (Shop supervisor) came up with this knife, back in the 80's.
I'll get a couple of pics later and post them. Mitchell may want to post up here. The last 3 or 4 I bought I got from him!
Best, Capt. Chris
PS: Here's the Non-catalog "GTR" along with sheath pics...CCS

Nothing at all on the back of the sheath, except the standard Randall stamp. In correspondence with Gary Randall, he remembered making about two dozen of them, and all were bought out of the showcase, not really advertised. Like you, Gary called it a drop point hunter, but that's not what they called it when I bought it. I was told Gary had made them personally, as a sort of experiment. It's a pretty knife, but just a wall hanger, as it's a tad small in the handle for my hand. But I couldn't resist it when I saw it.

Puts a whole different light on the knife once you get it right side up. In this perspective it definitly looks like a smaller blade than what a Griffin DP has. I want one, it's cool

It's the same knife Mike. Gary "did" make a run of these. WE all know the "Griffin" handle as it was nicknamed. It is now called the "Single Finger Grip". I think we're looking at the same knives, just 2 different "versions" of the story. Nice knives, no doubt. I believe there were more than one forging...or, perhaps more correctly: More seperate dates & times that the forging was completed. There are certainly more than a two dozen of these knives out there. I have seen 3 handle shape variants. SFG, 4 finger grip and "no" finger grip. Someone else might post up is they know of more???
Hindsight is always 50-50 but I would guess GTR made some and more were made by other shop craftsman. Hell: Mitchell has 4 at one Blade Show! (Or more...That's just how many I saw!)
Best, Capt. Chris

I could not find my "stored" photos of this knife so I shot 3 new ones. Sorry for the "quickness" but I couldn't spend a whole lot of time on these. The handle scales are a very dark, beautiful rosewood- RMK "shop-supplied". Like Fairbairn, I have also seen stag as well as: *Ivory- * Micarta- *Other woods. You'll notice a tight-stitched(butterfly) Johnson pouch sheath with the "DP" on the toe. I make it early 1980's.
Best, Capt. Chris

Chris, your knife looks absolutely identical to mine. ......didn't think I would get so many comments from one picture. Anyway, the only difference seems to be the scabbard. Your has additional stamps. DP. that mine does not.

Everyone,
Peter's knife has, what is now called, a "single finger grip" handle shape. This was the most common handle shape for the "Drop Point Hunter". Gary & I have both used these knives (before they were scarce) to gut, skin & clean whitetails. They do a remarkable job! GTR, like me, has moved on to the Model #26-4", "Pathfinder" since those mid 80's days.
Dave Griffin was the Randall shop supervisor (Scott's position) for quite some years back in this time period. Although Dave had fallen out of favor with many in the Randall shop, a good many folks still refer to this handle shape as a "Griffin" handle.
Call it what you like, the drop point hunter was a knife I would love to see the shop bring back! Thanks to all for an interesting topic.
Best, Capt. Chris
PS: This is just a wild-ass guess, but I would venture to say Peter's "DP" is handled in Ironwood!

I put that picture right side up. It must be tired, it rolled over again frown

Probably so Capt., the blade just looked smaller when I was messing with the pic.
