I've had this knife for decades. I think I bought it new in 1969 or 70. It has been carried and used a good bit. You can see the blemishes on (and in) the brass. It came in a box and without a sheath.
In those days, on this particular model anyway, the sheath was purchased seperately. I think it set me back a whoppin' "3" extra bucks, but I sprung for it...and it's pictured here. Great sheath...Comfortable...Thin...No problems.
What is "scarce" about this Gerber is the blade. The "Folding Sportsman II" came in a trailing point (this one) and a drop point. Almost all of them were stamped "Gerber...Portland Oregon" along with the serial number, as is this example. It's the "other" side of the blade that's unusual. Most were stamped USA. As you can see, this one was made with a "Sollingen" Gerber blade. I have no idea exactly how many came this way...but I only know of "one" other person who had one and that was my buddy, Zack (Don Zaccagnino / Knifemaker's Guild charter member / now deceased). I have combed the shows looking for another one and all I have encountered are either USA, Japan or unmarked.
Just thought I'd share it with ya'll. It's one excellent production knife!
Best, Capt. Chris
