I've had this knife for decades. I think I bought it new in 1969 or 70. It has been carried and used a good bit. You can see the blemishes on (and in) the brass. It came in a box and without a sheath.
In those days, on this particular model anyway, the sheath was purchased seperately. I think it set me back a whoppin' "3" extra bucks, but I sprung for it...and it's pictured here. Great sheath...Comfortable...Thin...No problems.
What is "scarce" about this Gerber is the blade. The "Folding Sportsman II" came in a trailing point (this one) and a drop point. Almost all of them were stamped "Gerber...Portland Oregon" along with the serial number, as is this example. It's the "other" side of the blade that's unusual. Most were stamped USA. As you can see, this one was made with a "Sollingen" Gerber blade. I have no idea exactly how many came this way...but I only know of "one" other person who had one and that was my buddy, Zack (Don Zaccagnino / Knifemaker's Guild charter member / now deceased). I have combed the shows looking for another one and all I have encountered are either USA, Japan or unmarked.
Just thought I'd share it with ya'll. It's one excellent production knife!
Best, Capt. Chris

Capt. Chris, that's a nice knife and an interesting combination for sure.
A friend of mine has a similar one in his collection. He bought it in the PX in the early 80's. I'll have to check.

I think we are quite familiar with Solingen blades in american knives - it happened before wink

I have one of those that was given to me in 1980 just before the Mt. St. Helen's blow. A friend of my Dad was in town (McCall, Idaho) and I showed him and his wife around Payette Lake. He sent me an engraved Gerber just like that one. I am in San Antonio and that knife is back in Idaho or I would take a picture of it and attach. I have used it a time or two but now the brass is stained and I need to "freshen" it up. Nice one regardless!!

Wow Cap!
That is cool. Never saw one with a Solingen blade.

Here's a Mel Pardue I've had for maybe 10 years. Unused, of course.

That's a beauty!
A nice, "clean" design.

It's a nice folder, Pat...but it ain't a Gerber Folding Sportsman II. We should start another thread, in fact several, showing other types/makers/blade designs of other folders.
Thanks, Capt. Chris
