April 21, 1836,

On this day, General Sam Houston, and 783 volunteers from Texas and all over the U.S. defeated General Santa Anna and 1500-2000 Mexican troops at San Jacinto just East of present day Houston.

The Battle proper, lasted a mere 18 minutes and was a complete rout. It avenged the Battles of the Alamo and Goliad.

The Battle secured Texas’ Independence and eventually paved the way for America’s expansion westward, all the way to California.
