This guy came out of the woods last Saturday to watch me bush hog this field on my place.

At first, I thought he was just a very large coyote but when the sunlight hit him, I could see that he was RED.

We hear coyotes "yipping" all the time at night out on our place but lately there has been a deep, long howl that is definitely different.

He watched me for at least 10 minutes so I got a pretty good look at him. He was probably 75-80 lbs and his face was not like the typical coyotes that we see all the time.

I'm sorry that the picture is not so clear. I took it on my phone, from inside my skid steer through the glass and the glass was pretty dirty.

Anyhow, maybe somebody on here can help me positively ID this critter.

"Coy Dog" would be my guess. We've killed a couple, over the decades, on our Bama property.
Hope this helps, Capt. Chris
PS: Coy Dogs have no fear of humans, more than a domestic dog, making them quite dangerous...CCS

Captain:

If this guy had long floppy ears, I'd agree with you and know ZACTLY where he got that RED color.

Here is a picture of Ol' Rusty less than 50 yards away from the first picture.

And he DID make the "rounds" during his lifetime!!!

Coach,

We're in farm country here. The term Coydog has been thrown around in conversations for years here by the locals. Most likely a cross breed of something is what you have there.

Well, whatever he was, he was a beautiful critter.

I enjoyed being able to look at him for as long as I did.

I wish my camera had captured that beautiful RED color when he stood just right in the sunlight!

Coach,
Yep,I agree, pretty much a coy-dog. No set rules on their coloration as the parenthood is rather dubious.

Average size of the coyote/dogs in my area are in the 60+ pound range.

And yes,they can be aggressive.

The past year or so in my area over six folks have been attacked while walking their dogs. Three died and three injured and this was in suburbia not in the woods.

And folks wonder why I pack heat...…….always!!!

Everything you just said Wayne. Repeat. Including size of 60-75 lbs. of the 4 carcasses I've actually seen. Their numbers have significantly increased in the past couple decades.
AND I've not hiked ANYWHERE without feeling safe, since being stalked for over a mountain mile by 2 of those big, without fear beasts while carrying my 6 month old son in the child backpack & holding my 3 year old daughter's hand almost 3 decades ago. Oath to myself was to never feel that badly again.
I haven't.

With that RED color that I saw on that critter, and that DEEP, LOW, HOWL that we have hearing at night, y’all are beginning to make me think that there may be some Red Hound Dog genes in the coyote population around here.
