I have a knife with a grungy sharpening stone. It does not look very used, but carries a lot of dark gunk of some sort, possibly from the leather, maybe in part from the snap on the stone pocket.
Anybody who knows a good way to clean up such stones, it would help me out with this one.
Thanks, Larry

Larry, Both my grandfathers would soak their sharpening stones, both large and small in warm soapy water and scrub with old tooth brush.Rinse with warm water .Towel dry and let them air dry for a day then reapply honing oil.Worked for them and works for me.

I have an old Carborundum sharpening Stone and on the cardboard box it says "To clean, wash with Kerosene", but I have not done this, so I can't say how well it works.
