Three shades of "Old Yeller"

This is what makes this material so great. It ages/mellows in some respects as do some organic materials like ivory and stag. The change in color seems to be exposure to UV light.

Great comparison. Thanks for the photo Joe. The hilt on the left knife is unique.

That’s a great picture for sure. Thanks for showing this “transition”.

Rocky, to me the one in the middle looks more like AGM in color minus the "grain" for lack of a better term, and I have several of them.

I believe the one on the "left" to be a,seldom seen these days, piece of white "lineal" micarta. It was used by the shop for a brief period of time in the 1990's-early 2000's.
Joe has the knife...but that's what it appears to be...to me...anyway.
Best, Capt. Chris
PS: Although I need to do some "STASH-DIVING" to find this one and take better pics, here's an example of white, lineal micarta on a #10-3", straight point...in a period-correct oxblood pouch sheath.

This is a good conversation. Thanks for showing the material differences.

The knife on the left the Capt. mentions, was made well before (late 70's/early 80's) the material he references was available/used. In fact, it was used for a short period when the Westinghouse supply ran out. So, what you have is what Westinghouse Ivorite looks like when relatively fresh and not exposed to the elements - UV light.

The knife in the middle is a seven spacer knife, circa 1972. Again, well before AGM was even a thought by a couple of decades anyway. An extremely rare knife in seven spacer configuration, far more rare than brown micarta.

Lastly, the knife on the right has been exposed to an abundance of UV light and "aged" quite a bit. It to made circa 1974, well before any of the other materials mentioned were even a thought.

In the end what you have is three shades of Westinghouse.

Mitchell--

Have you run into darkening on one side only...because owners left knives laying so that only one side was exposed to UV?

"UV light & Aged"
Here are my only examples with similar "the same stock" AGM Micarta, provided by me, and built by the shop in order of my orders...years apart...each was exposed to the sunlight(aged) on a table, and rotated to "age" the material....each knife I received was MUCH lighter in color than the others(not the first, obviously)...the 12-14 took the longest time...a complete summer, with rotations when ever I thought about it...UV does/will effect the color of the material!!
they now remain in the "locker" away from light....
as always the photos appear much darker than the actual product...

:-)Rocky
