I purchased this knife today thinking it is from the late 60s, early 70s.
The knife has seen better days but I like it as is.

I heard that I could send this knife into Randall and maybe they can polish it and make it looking better?

Should I do that or leave it alone?

As always, I appreciate the help.

Thank you,
Steve

Assuming the sheath is original to the knife, it is late 80s to mid 90s - mostly going by the Sullivan made sheath with its smooth back and that specific hone pocket design. Around 1995, the baby dot snaps were replaced with Randall logo snaps.

You could have the knife cleaned, but it would not match the sheath condition. It's solid user as is.

What am I missing?

Steve,
What you're missing here is a post from "crutch", if, and when you get that, you will have what you have, which is what Mitchell has already told you...
Anyway, in it's current condition it really doesn't make any difference how old it is....the value of your knife is that of a user...and a very good user it will be...I'm not so sure the shop can remove all the pits in the blade anyway....
folks around here do not take cross forum stuff very well....
I'm just say'n

:-)Rocky

Steve,

The term, "Vietnam Model" always commands attention in a beginner's quest to grab it. Sellers know this and usually keep quiet unless challenged. Before purchasing, investigate and obtain experienced opinions from Chris Stanaback, Mitchell Harrison, or Joe Dorsky, AKA "Crutchtip" (and there are others, here). As Mitchell stated already you got valuable advice, and it should just accepted as fact. It is a "hard pill to swallow" that you got taken for a ride. Hopefully for you, a lesson learned.

Remember too, that there will be real Vietnam Randalls down the road, but only documents and /or written provenance "attached" to the Model adds value and nails it down to the Vietnam War.

The original owner's DD214 showing him stationed in Vietnam during the war years can presuppose he took it with him, however, he may have left the Model 14 in his sock drawer back home in Indiana, as one of my customers did.

Buck, Nothing new. Plenty of Soldiers in WWII left their issued Case V-42 and Camillus USMC stiletto at home in a foot locker. That is why you see so many minty examples of those 2 knives today. To nice to use.

I wrote this 21 years ago. Damn, what the hell?!? In any case, it lends to part of this discussion.
