A couple years ago, I spent an entire day cutting/clearing walnut trees on a family farm. I was able to cut various crotch sections looking for a perfectly figured piece. Of all the wood I cut that day, I narrowed it down to a single piece that is currently large enough to use on any Randall knife. My question......what handle configuration will best bring out highly figured wood, in your opinion(s)? Thx.
Good question and I'll be interested to see what responses you get. I used Birdseye Maple for a Mod #22 handle that showed the figure nicely. __________ Doug
What knife? some of the dealer special will offer a bigger choice! One of the choices you need to make is which end will be the butt & if the wood looks good enough to not have a butt cap or plate. The squared single finger grip is nice. Finger grips will only show the grain on the side that the grips are on. Also a bigger knife equal a bigger handle more of your wood. Whatever knife you decide on double check the handle size & cut it yourself to ensure the best grain is left on it. When you have decided mark the block to get the orientation you like also so that when it's in the sheath the side with the best figure is showing. Just my $1.02 worth sorry so long winded lol.

I would think a fish tail handle with fish scale checkering. or make it match your favorite shotgun.

All of the comments are great considerations. I too believe that the Border Patrol handle shows up quality grain and color the best.
Be sure to stabilize the wood and let it sit in a properly controlled environment as long as you can possibly wait. I have had dense handle materials such as Musk-ox and Lignum Vitae move (shrink/develop hairline cracks). Especially during the heating months, you need to add moisture to the air where you store your knives and handle materials.
