Thanks a lot, Jimmy...
i discovered the Navy Marine air crewman reading Sheldon's book. You can't figure my happiness when i found the one i posted available for purchase in a gun shop... in my (small) experience, here in Italy it's not so easy finding this kind of Randall knives.
it is a great looking knife and an excellent user too...
best,

Daniele,
Thanks for the image, your pic and the 1 in Sheldon's book are the only one's I have ever saw.
I'm wondering why this apparently rare RMK has never been discussed, or written about...and only a few photograph's available ?

Guido, Since I've read an arcticle on "Coltelli" about your collection, I know that You are an expert other than a great collector...and I have no doubt You know anything on this particular #5-5... I know you own at least one, too...I saw a pic of your Navy Marine (with other beatiful #5)
but the one I bought still is the only one (except yours) I see...
Thanks for sharing your picture...

Outstanding knives! I love the wide blade of your NAVAL/MARINE AIR CREW SURVIVAL Guido!
Wasn't the Combat Companion a "descendent" of this concept?
Daniele, your's looks almost exactly like the one in Sheldon's book smile

Up to, and including, the mid-late 1990's if you ordered a Model #5-5" with teeth you received this configuration of blade. With the introduction of the Combat Companion the shop eliminated this more "refined" offering, opting for the "CC" grind with sawteeth. One could argue that a Model #16-7",#15-5 1/2" and #14-7 1/2" would result in a very similar blade shape and look when the sawteeth were ordered.
I'm a big fan of the old grind (#5-5" with teeth). The bear camp special and other specialties sported this look. I am also surprised there are not more of them around. Interesting post...
Best, Capt. Chris

Captain,
I understand the 'old grind' teeth, but I was inquiring about the Randall model #5-5" NAVAL/MARINE/AIR CREWMAN knife. Was it a catalog listed knife or maybe an un-listed catalog knife ?

I have never saw the knife..well except for 3 picture's, or saw one listed anywhere for sale. It just seem's it should have been written about or dicussed in a forum..somewhere, along with the other military type 14's-15's-16's-17's and 18's.

Peter, i'm sure mine is newer than the knife in Sheldon's book.
Basing this on the spacer stack and the sheath(mine has all-thin spacers and a JSB sheath stamper 5-5 on rear) unfortunately i'm an awful photographer and I ain't got any other good pic to share.
If i'm correct, the first Navy/Marine Aircrew survival knives are prior to the introduction of the #18....
I think the Good Capt. (or anyone who knows) could say more...
best,

So, in base of Capt's last explanation, can I consider this one as a Crewman...too?

Guido,
That's the "newer" grind and teeth. Take a look (for comparison) at the "spearpoint" blade shape. The older ones utilized more of the original blade shape. I think the reason folks don't "hear"...or "see" more about the older ones is the fact that...It wasn't any big deal! Like anything that gets discontinued or altered in design, it makes the older style more desirable.
Best, Capt. Chris
