Can we start a group that is called by the acronym SHAG? Of course, it stands for Stag Handle Appreciation Group, and everyone is welcome. You don't even need to own a knife with a Stag handle (though it certainly helps when it comes to truly appreciating them).

I'll start with a few photos.

The #1-7" that my dad gave to me a few years ago:

#5-5" with Finger Grips:

My youngest son's #5-6":

This is my #5-6" that has a Stag handle that can clearly be appreciated by Tom "Dark Stag" DeHart:

My only Combat Companion (aka, "Battlefield Stag"):

Nordic Special #496:

Glades Hunters #61 & #62:

Finally, we can't neglect the #25 handle, so here is one of my #25-6" knives, which has fine silver furniture and sterling silver spacers:

Ken,
Where these photo's taken with the Cannon 90 IS? These are great, feels like you can reach out and touch the stag. Great Job.

Ken, I'd like to be a member of SHAG, but only if we use it as an American term and not a British term. Because the British term has nothing to do with stag handled randalls. Here's a picture of my most recently acquired stag handled 3-5. I have several others but really like the older polished stag.

Nope. The first two were probably taken with my D200, and the rest with my D300. The Nikkor 60mm Micro lens was used for all of them. Excellent lens.

Dan I really like that stag. Ken your photos are works of art as usual. You also have some beautiful stag. I especially like the one your father left you. I have some pretty nice stag myself. What I don't have is the knack or ability to take such great pic's. Do the knives have to be Randall? I have some very nice Puma's and they used wonderful stag back in the day. Not so much today.

I wouldn't say that my dad left that #1-7" to me, because my dad is still very much alive, and we hunt together every time I visit, which is at least twice a year. He turns 75 this year, and my parents will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary next year.

It's important to note that the only way to get a specific piece of stag on your Randall is to furnish it yourself. All shop supplied stag is pulled, per knife, from the particular barrel containing the appropriate sized stag. No other consideration is given. However, over the last five years I think the shop has furnished some of the nicest stag I've seen. These three examples were all shop supplied and randomly selected.

Most excellent. The best part is that I can usually find it for $5 or so per bottle, and even the magnum (1.75L) ones for about $9. Their Chardonnay is also very good, as well as their Champagnes that are sold under the name Barefoot Bubbly. I prefer their Cabernet Sauvignon, and my wife likes their Chardonnay. At least, that is what each of us usually drinks.

Around 1965 I called Bo to order a SAG as appeared in the center of the catalog. He told me that a customer had ordered one (#1 -7" ) but had backed out and I could have it immediately. "YES!" I told him and Air Mailed [ quaint Postal process then] the cash. By the next week I had it. Pardon the mediocre photo.

That Armadillo Hunter (aka, #4-6-6-SS) is an excellent contribution to SHAG, and guarantees your low SHAG member number.

I have the knarliest stag Randall ever made and the "grayest"; here's the "Gray Ghost", as Dubie coined it and I'll post the knarliest tomorrow.

Many thanks, Bill. That is definitely a gorgeous example of Crown Stag. Did you supply it, or did Doug Kenefick find that "Jewel" for you?

Thanks Steve and Tom D. There is no way I can get close to Dale Dorris' great postings, but in the spirit of the new Ken Lunde "SHAG" bunch, here goes another one. This is a, I think, rather unique Combat "Buddy" Companion with a stag handle that has both a little "bark" and some of the smooth character that some of the vintage RMKs have. I latched onto this one from Miles Welze in 2008. It seems like yesterday? How time flies when one is having fun with Randall knives! These are Miles' photos. He makes much better ones that I do. Thanks Ken. This Sasquatch came from Steve Peters, so I don't know who supplied the crown stag. I didn't think to ask Steve when I talked to him last. He did tell me that all the other red dyed crown stag like this were in his possession and they were a small number. I have the "big brother" Large Sasquatch mate to this one, it is not quite as red but still beautiful. I'll post it later on. Got to get some work done today?? in between knife and gun deals. Bill J.

I knew I should have kept this one...
1-6", sawteeth, ss, red/white/blue/ spacers, one of the sexiest peices of stag I have had in the safe, finger grips, wrist thong, compass, Model C sheath...can't keep 'em all!

Dale,

As usual you have a beautiful way of presenting your knives. I especially liked the touch of showing the old folding rulers. I so fondly remember them as a child in my uncles wood shop.

Best.

Thanks Topos, I appreciate your kind words. The old rulers were used daily many years ago and have been in the family for quite a long time. I keep them in the corner of a display cabinet with some knives just so I know they're safe from curious little fingers. There's another photo where I used the old rulers behind the knives too, all custom supplied buffalo horn handles, in the photo contest thread.

Send me an email when you get a chance.

My Picture skills are poor, ONE DAY I'll try to take the time to work on them. 'Til then, I hope this will suffice... Fresh from unwrapping today, courtesy of Mr. Rick Bowles, my first Stag Randall! [image][/image]

Great pics, guys. I have a couple of stag handled Randalls and will post pics if I can shoot anything remotely near the quality of some of the pics in this post.

Maybe I ought to spend more on a camera and cut back on the knives.

Jeff,

I don't know what kind of camera you have and unless you have something really primitive I would continue to spend your money on Randall Knives. Just for fun I tried a little experiment today and pulled out my very first Digital Camera. Over 12 years old and considered rather low end even in 1998. A 2.2 Megapixel Kodak DX3600 Point & Shoot. 100% Auto, no manual settings whatsoever and here is the result with a few photos for the SHAG Thread. These photos are not on the same planet when compared to Ken's and are inferior to my current camera but I think this demonstrates that you don't need a Hot Rod Camera to take decent, respectable photos.

In Ken's Photography Tips Thread he said:
Quote:

About lighting, photography is all about light, and one's ability to capture it effectively. Everything else is a distant secondary concern, including equipment.

And I agree with this statement 100%. It's all about lighting. I take all my photos outside on a table on my patio out back. I always try to work with an overcast sky or when the sun is behind the clouds or I can set a small table on a side of the house where the direct sun is blocked. Obviously, if the weather is bad I am out of business but sometimes I can get enough light in my garage with the door open, I just try to avoid direct sunlight. Other than light I always tell people using digital cameras to take tons of pictures at different angles, views using different backgrounds, they are all free and easy to delete, if you get 10 out of 100, that's worth it. Lastly, it really helps to have a decent Digital Photo Processing program on your computer and in that regard Ken is very knowledgeable as well.

Lastly is my only unused Randall. Combat Companion. Feels very light in the hand. Not quite sure why I haven't used it yet. Right now it stays in a stand on display. I do love stag.

Mike is definitely one of the best.

He's supposed to have a special knife for me at Blade this year. It's something that he and I agreed to about 4 years ago. I can't stand the wait any longer... Is it June yet ???

Some really pretty stag, Wally, and I'm sure that I don't know but without even digging mine out they remind me a lot of a couple old Pumas AND two old Uncle Henry folders that I love.

Jim, you've really got some beauties, some great engraving and Ivory tips in the EDO Photo thread too... Do you source your own engraving?

I have only had one knife engraved and that was done by Ron Skaggs. I have a few more I want done and am contemplating what and who at this time. I've heard Joe Mason is very good too.

Attached is a photo of the knife Ron Skaggs did for me. He carved a wolf for the butt.

Jim,
The wolf carving on the butt cap is positively beautiful! I have never seen anything like that added with custom carving. I'll say one thing for you,.. you sure have great taste.

David, thanks, it was a picuture posting test and I tried to delete it immediately but got a notice that the time to do so had expired. I was able to delete the pic and verbage, though, and that left only a "blank" post. It's just a glitch in the new system, I guess.

Thanks, anyway.

Here's a quick pic of one that I'm getting at Blade. Not a Randall but I like it...

Several years ago Mike Ruth promised me a stag handled damascus bowie that he would submit as one of his test knives for his Master's stamp. Since then Mike seems to be doing okay in the knife making business. He won "Best New Maker" at his first Blade Show and he won "Best Bowie" last year. Now he is finally getting around to submitting his Master's test knives. He sent me this picture of my knife yesterday and, if it's any indication, I'm guessing he might win his Master's stamp at this year's show.

Posted this in the Ranall model of the week thread, thought I'd post pictures here too. It's a 1-8 APFK with really beautiful polished stag w/finger grooves, nickle silver hilt, saw/no saw stainless blade, radiused duraluminum butt cap with thong hole and did I mention some beautiful polished stag. I believe it's a 7 option knife, I could be wrong and hopefully someone will correct me. I'm really intriqued over the saw/no saw grind compared to the standard grind on the #1's. You definately can tell the blade could get saw teeth. Since my pictures are so large and if I reduce them anymore they'll be distorted I'll just add in a separate post.
Thanks for looking,

Dan,

That's a pretty Model #1.

If the ST Grind with No ST is a chargeable option I would say you have 8 options there and if not 7 options.

1. SS Blade
2. ST No ST Grind ?????
3. NS Std Double Hilt
4. Metal and Fiber Spacers
5. Stage Handle
6. Finger Grooves
7. Duralumin Butt Cap
8. Thong Hole

Good Find!

Pardon the quick snapshots (better photos, taken with better lighting, will be taken in a day or two), but I needed to share the excitement at receiving my Ruana CB CK that has a hand-picked (by me, at the Ruana factory) Elk Stag handle:

To put the Ruana CB CK into perspective, it is roughly the size of a Randall #12-9", with a slightly thicker blade, and with Thumb Notches that could never be construed as Thumb Nadas (inside joke).

Ruana's web page that describes the CB CK is here: http://ruanaknives.com/bowies.aspx

Wow Ken, what a beauty. Great piece of elk stag as well. Very impressive blade and the sheath is super.

Off Randall topic, but still on SHAG, here is a sweet stagger by Geno Denning. Shown with a small Seb for size comparison. The guy does very nice work for reasonable prices. I have a larger one with sheep horn.

The purpose of this thread is to admire outstanding specimens of Stag regardless of the knife maker.

"The purpose of this thread is to admire outstanding specimens of Stag regardless of the knife maker."

Then why is it in the Randall Forums and not the off topic forums?...and by the way, same goes for your chuddy bear sheaths... fine work, but not RMK products so why do you insistently post them in the RMK forums?

Seems to me there is alot of crap being said and insinuated around these forums lately that are just ridiculous!

If you don't like a member or two why do we have to run them and their great contributions right out of the forums so darn consistently?!?

I admit that you're correct. The intent of this thread is as I described a post or two ago, and it thus belongs in another area of the forum.

(If a Moderator is reading this, please move this thread to the "Dirty Waters Lounge -The GOOD at Knife Talk Forums" area of The Lounge. It'd be nice for it to be a sticky.)

While we're on the subject of what is and is not appropriate, what about Don Hedrick "mini" and "micro" versions of Randall Made knives? Given that they are small versions of Randalls, they seem related to me, especially when shown with a full size and genuine Randall Made knife.

Given the controversy over "fake" Randall sheaths, I simply decided that it was best to simply not discuss the subject. Thank you for forcing me to to raise it again.

Just FYI, Chuddy Bear Sheaths are not fakes, and the maker (Charles Dominick, whose day job is being a Law Enforcement Officer) puts his own unique stamp on his sheaths, like this:

He has never made a sheath and purported it to be made by anyone else (aka, a fake).

My point was to simply state that as long as a sheath was specifically made for a Randall Made knife, why should a photo of it not be appropriate for this area of the forum, especially if it is clearly not a fake?

Sort of off-topic, but given that Sullivan's Holster Shop is currently not accepting orders for custom sheaths for Randall Made knives, if one wants such a sheath, they need to look elsewhere.

This has been shown before, but it is my favorite Randall Model #21. I brought a "Zack" hunting knife into Bo's office on one of many visits to the Randall shop back in the 80's. I had asked him previously if he had one of Zack's knives (Don Zaccagnino from Pahokee, Fl.) in the museum. I had noticed Zack's photo but no knife...Bo replied that "No, he did not...but he certainly wanted one along with at least one of every Florida maker". (Paraphrase...sue me!)
Anyhow: I gave it to Bo and he stopped me in my tracks and said "No sir". He then started screaming..."DAVID...DAVID!" (Dave Griffin, the shop foreman at the time). Dave came out of the shipping/prep room and Bo said: "Get the Captain a Model #21. We're doin' a trade".
That was that. Bo didn't always go for the "Give me a penny"idea. He had Dave Griffin drop everything he was doing and snap up a sheath, clean and sharpen this "Little Game" and "trade" it to me for that Zack knife...which, by the way, is "still" in the museum!
OK: End of story, except I had Bo sign the sheath for me. Hope you folks enjoy it...and....It's nice, unique stag!!
Best, Capt. Chris

I realized that I neglected to post photos of my pair of #12-9" #14 Grind knives, one with Brass furniture, and the other with Nickel Silver.

Ken,

Nice pair.

I guess I didn't realize that the Model #12 - 9, 14 Grind could be had with the #25 handle and all NS hardware considering the 5 option limit. I think all the similar ones I have seen with a NS FCH had an aluminum butt cap.

Great Photos as usual.

Tom,

Cap should correct me if I am wrong, but I count the following four chargeable options on that #12-9 with #14 Grind: Stainless Steel Blade, Forward Curved Hilt (the Nickel Silver material comes free when specifying the #25 handle), #25 Handle, and Nickel Silver Butt Cap.

Stag Scales on Bowie

THIS IS NOT A COLIN COX KNIFE

When I acquired this knife I had no idea who Greg Cox was much less Colin Cox so it is absolutely not my intention to rehash the story behind Colin Cox as enough water has already passed under that bridge. Greg Cox was the maker of this knife not his father Colin Cox.

Greg Cox has made a number of different knives, mostly smaller hunting knives that I have seen sell on EBay although I have not seen anything of his for a couple of years. This is the only large bowie style knife of his that I have ever seen.

I acquired this knife off EBay several years ago because I liked the looks of it and I thought the price was fair. The exposed tang with stag scales on a big knife is one of the things that caught my eye. The handle may not look that large in the photos but actually it's quite thick.

10"(actually 10 1/2) 440C SS Blade Mirror Polished
The top bevel is not sharpened
NS Hilt
Full Exposed Tang
Stag Scales
Bronze and NS Mosaic Pins
NS Lanyard Fitting

This is a big knife, the last photo is side-by-side with my RMK Model #12 - 9, 14 Grind for scale.

Tom,

That is some great two-piece Stag.

To continue with more photos, I took photos of one of my #5-4" knives this morning, the one with a Stag handle:

With possibly a few exceptions, I think I like the rounded hilt better than the squared off one.

I came to the somewhat shocking conclusion that it is possible to become mesmerized by Stag, as evidenced by the #23 that I just snagged from Plaza Cutlery (their photos, not mine):

Here is a recent addition to the collection.

Early 50's finger grip stag with a nickel silver hilt and aluminum butt cap. Beautiful wide flap Heiser sheath. It'll soon be 60 years old....

Tom,

You have not only been lucky in terms of getting great shop-supplied Stag, but it is also Stag that is to your liking. How long can this streak of luck possibly last?

Tom,
That looks like the same stag #21 I saw being finished up at the shop when the "Chief" and I met up a little over a week ago. Did it come from Gary & Leanna Clinton? Nice goin'...

No fair you seeing it first, though.

I talked to Leanna on the phone about it! She had ordered all 3 of my Challenger "Mission Memorial" knives and I needed to let her know the final one was on the way. I tried to work out a "partial trade" but no dice. I figured it was a customer order. Oh well: At least I know where it's "home" is...and you know you always have "tradin' material" with me.
Best, Capt. Chris

I hope everyone who appreciates stag will enjoy this latest "move". Here's a couple of photos of a huge, "nasty" piece of stag on one of my Model #19-5's. Let's see some of yours.
Best, Capt. Chris

Jim,
I wish I had known you had that one. Mike ordered it from me about 4-5 years ago. That, believe it or not, is Randall shop-supplied stag! I did not open the wrapper before I sent it on to Mike. I kiddingly told him that, if I had, he never would have received it. I hope whoever it went to is lookin' for a "trade". Terrific knife.
Best, Capt. Chris

Picked this up in a trade from a good customer (and lurker on these forums) at the show. I sold it to him a couple of years ago. It will probably be a couple of "more" years before I see a piece of stag like this again, especially on a #5-6". Thought ya'll would enjoy it...
Best, Capt. Chris

Here's a few pics of my Bud Tracy Hunter Bowie with some really nice stag. The blade is 154 CM and it is 7" in length. Bud also makes his own sheaths. I have another one of his "backpacker" models in D-2 and skinned an entire bear with it without touching the blade. Bear skins are the toughest on a blade, IMHO.

Here is a new to me, but not new Model 11 4 inch with customer supplied stag that is suitable for posting here.
It seems like this stag is like a teardrop shaped handle.
You see, I don't just like ironwood smile

So my good customers (and friends) at Jerry's Pawn & Gun, here in Ocala, are putting together a new website. They sell quality firearms and knives...of course: Randalls. They asked me to send them "one" Randall to put on their website. They don't want to sell this Randall, rather use it to advertise the fact that they buy, sell & trade in Randall knives. I think I just took a couple of photos of the "one" for them. My Randall Model "one". Hope ya'll like it.
Best, Capt. Chris

Here's my latest Shag Randall. It's a model 15, with CDT, very nice stag handle with finger grooves and thong hole, all black spacers, brass single finger flat top hilt, stainless blade with thumb grooves. If it looks familiar, it should. It's a replica of a forum build from last year. I liked the way it turned out so much that I ordered one from the Captain. Received last weekend. Hope you all like it. I would have taken more pictures but the battery in my camera went dead after I took this picture.

Great looking Airman, Dan.
Looks like my favorite setup for a model 15 - thanks for sharing!
Are these right hand finger grooves or the model 15 standard 4 finger grips?
What a gorgeous piece of stag smile Did you supply the stag or came it from the shop like that all by itself?

Best, Peter

Dan,
If you'll email me the Stag #15 photo I'll resize it (It's 240kb verses 99.8kb) and post it. Nice knife!
Best, Capt. Chris
PS: Answer: Randall shop-supplied stag and RH fg's...CCS

By the way, what are all of the options you ordered on this #15?

Pap, the options are: CDT w/stag handle, RH finger grooves, all black spacers, stainless steel blade, flat top brass single finger hilt, thumb grooves and thong hole. I believe that's it.

Great looking stag handles guys...... stag handles have so much personality!

Here is a great old hunk of stag with a brass pin running through it.

It's also in a Moore sheath with translucent buttons....... rare as hen's teeth.

I posted this in the knife of the week thread and thought I'd post here in the STAG thread too: It's the very first Randall I ordered from the shop way back in 2007. It's a model 19-5 with stainless blade, top bevel sharpened, thumb notches, nickle silver single hilt, beautiful shop supplied stag, duraluminum crows beak cap, standard rwb spacers and optional black sheath to highlight the nickle silver and duraluminum jewelry. Hope in enjoy, I certainly do.
