It is time for an update on our RANDALL WARRIOR project. This is a report on funds expended, not received. Rhett will handle that part later. To date we have spent a total of $721.13. The break down is $572.38 for goods sent and $148.38 for postage. I use USPS Priority Flat Rate postage. It allows anything that can be stuffed into a box measuring 11" x 8.5" x 5.5" regardless of weight for a charge of $ 8.95 (just up from $8.10). We save $4.00 - $8.00 per shipment using flat rate. Gatorade powder is heavy. Twenty boxes have been sent so far, twelve of them in the last few weeks. This is due to changing addresses. I have four more in the Jeep ready to go out tomorrow. I am sending all receipts to Rhett so if you would like to know what the break down is, call him (don't thank me now Rhett. You can do that later. ). Anyone wanting an Excel spreadsheet of the expenditures send me a private message with your email address and I will send it to you. I expect to have another announcement soon, stay tuned.

Tom, Many thanks. My nephew spent a year in Afghanistan 2005-2006 with the Virginia NG, and my niece spent a year in Iraq 2006-2007 as a Capt., US Army. I sent many, many packages and know very well what is involved. It takes a lot of time shopping for the right things, packing and getting it mailed. I know everyone appreciates your efforts as well as our fine men and women in uniform. I will never forget a picture my niece sent me from a Marine compound outside of Baghdad.
The Marines Are At War America Is At The Mall
Unfortunately that is true for far too many people here at home.
It's a shame you even have to offer the spreadsheet but I guess that's a sign of the times.

Thanks for your time and effort!!!
It's amazing how good you can get packing those flat rate boxes; 12-16 pounds or more.
I seal liquids and odorous items with a vac sealer.
On section (17) of the customs form I check the "Redirect to Address Below:" box and write in "Any US Soldier at this APO." That way the package will not be sent back to you (which you may be charged for) and the contents will still go to one of "our" finest.

Tom, I'm sure you will get other suggestions but here are some things we found very welcome.
Beef Jerky - Always Welcome, Nutritious plus the salt content Powered Gatorade, Kool Aid - Things that just need water added Rolls of Lifesavers, cough drops, throat lozenges Granola Bars, Power Bars, Trail Bars - But nothing that will melt Small Bag of Gummy Bears and similar candy Individual bag serving of nuts - like you get on the airplane Individual Packages of Crackers Individually packaged things that can be put in pockets
Non-Edible Items
Individual Packs of Kleenex Individually packaged Clean Wipes - To wipe off faces Eye Drops - Wash sand out of eyes Q-Tips - Clean sand out of ears Tubes of Sun Screen Tubes of Hand Creams and lotions Foot Powders Pre-Paid calling cards (International) Music CD's and DVD Movies Small Games like checkers, Back Gammon Playing Cards
These immediately came to mind and there are many others. Some items may seem corny but this comes from feedback from family members that have served in the middle east. I can personally say that we have sent boxes with all these items and they were delivered.
When the soldiers are in large compounds these kinds of things can be acquired but they have to buy them. When in more remote areas they are invaluable.
Thanks Again

I've got good friends in A-stan right now, a couple of the things I send over and over is chef boyardee microwaveable meals and cans of beenie weenies. It's hot enough most of the time to eat them right out of the can and the flat rate priority mail box is the way to go. One of the flat rate boxes will hold 16 single serving of chef boyardee microwaveable tins, if you stack 'em right. The same box will hold a 12 pack flat of beenie weenies with room for more stuff on top. HTH...

I haven't thought about this for a while because my niece and nephew have been out of harm's way for some months now but I remember we tried to send as many packages to them and their buddies as we could even if it were more than they could use. They always told us that there were more than a few that got little or nothing from family or friends and everything was shared and sometimes they gave stuff to the local population. I also remember soliciting friends and other relatives to send packages. Those that said they would were very sincere and most followed through. I don't fault those that didn't because I know that it just got away from them. But I also found that those that didn't would gladly donate to someone who would put it together. It's more work than you think, but in reality, nothing can duplicate the personal touch. I would encourage everyone that wants to help to participate by sending a package, or more realistically, donate to some group that is actively doing so. I've said my piece.

Tom and I have been talking about this project the past few days. To date over $4,000.00 has been donated. Less the two $300.00 checks I have sent Tom for package content purchases leaves a balance of $3,449.70. This does not include a couple of the 10% ($110.00) promises that have not been received yet. So money on hand at present is $3,449.70. The 70 cents is from where Peter Roas included the PayPal fee of $4.70 with his 10% payment. Any 10% ($110.00) donations still out there or if you want to join the group please use email address payrks@gate.net for PayPal payment or send a personal check to the Randall Knife Society office. P.O. Box 158, Meadows of Dan, VA 24120. You will shortly receive another update announcement from Tom. Regards, Rhett

To our RKS Member Tom for all ya give!
A Patriotic Wish Edgar Guest
I'd like to be the sort of man the flag could boast about; I'd like to be the sort of man it cannot live without; I'd like to be the type of man That really is American: The head-erect and shoulders-square, Clean-minded fellow, just and fair, That all men picture when they see The glorious banner of the free.
I'd like to be the sort of man the flag now typifies, The kind of man we really want the flag to symbolize; The loyal brother to a trust, The big, unselfish soul and just, The friend of every man oppressed, The strong support of all that's best, The sturdy chap the banner's meant, Where'er it flies, to represent.
I'd like to be the sort of man the flag's supposed to mean, The man that all in fancy see wherever it is seen, The chap that's ready for a fight Whenever there's a wrong to right, The friend in every time of need, The doer of the daring deed, The clean and generous handed man That is a real American.
Hey Tom! You The MAN, THANKS!
See Ya, Chief

The Sargeant is at the "Alamo", near Kabul in Afghanistan. The knife he is talking about that he ordered in Iraq is actually one of two I ordered when I was there with him, so they are actually in my name, although one of them is for him. They were ordered identical, and are far from standard or "off the shelf" models. He is now carrying the model one that I carried in Iraq. Several times in Iraq he was with me when out of the blue someone would come up and say "Hey man, is that a Randall?" After that happened several times he said he had to have one, so we ordered them then. Yes, the Alamo is definitely a "War Zone". If I can get this picture to load, you'll see the old Sarge. The picture was taken at Baghdad Airport in 2004 [ [image] [/image]

Great pic of a good old Southern Warrior.
If it wasn't for South Carolina, we'd have probably lost the Revolutionary War.

Just for kicks, here's another shot of the Randall Warrior, seated on Saddam Hussiens' throne at the Al Faw palace at Camp Victory, Baghdad. Me and the old sarge have been friends for about 22 years. I always thought this was a good picture of him. I'll try to refrain from straying off the topic of RMKs from now on. [image] [/image]

Here's a quote, directly from the Randall Warrior while we were in Iraq. "If it wasn't for them Goodyears, we'd a had some bad days" The Sarge is 54 years old and on his second tour, going on 22 years in the military. He's definitely a fine soldier, a combat proven volunteer and capable of carrying his own "wieght"

To date there have been thirty-five packages sent to our Randall Warriors at a total cost of $1,342.27. The USPS Flat Rate postage is $8.95 per box. The postage runs about 1/4 to 1/3 of the cost but the flat rate boxes are the only way to go. There is $143.19 in goods and supplies purchased and waiting to be mailed. The most requested items right now are canned tuna and crackers, baby wipes, Emergen-C vitamin powder and Gator Ade powder and jerky. Don't ask now but one of the most popular shipments held a fishing rod and reel and other fishing tackle! Sgt. Doug suggested that. I have several thank you emails and I think some more will be posted soon. Thanks you for our generosity!

Here is another email from Sgt. Abrams, one of our warriors. It's kind of a peek at what life is like over there. Quote:
I got another two boxes. Thank you. I put them on our shop table and they were gone. The Marines look forward to your boxes. Thanks for the E-mergency packets. We had a guy go down for bronchitis just the other day. The vitamin c will help. If you could send athlete's foot powder that would be great. They don't sell it here. We have to be in our boots for 14 hrs a day, so our feet are getting messed up. Thank you for your support.
Eight bottles of Dr. Scholls on the way to Iraq.

I buy the stuff, put it in a box and take it to the post office, no big deal. It is all of our member's donations and fund raisers that make it happen.

I am working on the next RKS newsletter and I will include the following in the introduction for RKS members that do not have internet access: The "Soldier Care Package Program". This is a special internet project on KnifeTalkForums.com, Randall Forum, where members are donating money for care packages for our soldiers in Iraq. These packages contain items that our soldiers do not have access in Iraq such as Gator-Aid, sanitary handi wipes, nuts, canned tuna, beef jerky, powdered drinks, etc; Texas member, Thomas Welch, is bird-dogging this effort and sending the packages. To date over $4,000.00 has been donated and by the end of the month that figure should be even higher as a special eBay auction is now in progress. Thank you tomthbomb. Those of you that do not have internet access and would like to contribute to this worthy cause may do so by sending your check or credit card numbers to the RKS office. Please specify amount and what for so I don't think it is dues payment. You are also encouraged to write a short letter to the soldiers which are included in the packages. Those of you that do have internet access may read about our special Care Package effort at this link on www.KnifeTalkForums.com. That link http://www.knifetalkforums.com/showflat....1&fpart=all

I think it would be a great thing to include some Christmas cards in the boxes going to our Warriors next month. If you would like to send some cards please do not address them to a specific Warrior so they can be distributed amongst the squad. Please send me a P.M. and I will give you my address for cards to go in the boxes. For our members outside of the U.S.A. I will send you a direct address for the Warriors. If you can think of some gifts we can send specifically for Christmas I would appreciate the help. Sometimes I think I am running out of fresh ideas. Please, don't suggest fruit cake!

Thanks Big Jim.
All mail to our warriors must be at the post office by December 5th to get to Iraq and Afghanistan by Christmas Day.
This is not difficult thing to do. Address one card each to Sgt. Michael Jennings and Sgt. Tredwell Abrams. P.M. me for my address and send it so I can put in a special Christmas box by December 5th.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day and remember some of the special fighters and warriors that make that possible.

Yeah, this is not going away yet.
December 5th is the deadline. I need your cards by Dec. 1st. That means in about a week or never mind.
Thanks Jim and Kevin.
Kevin, also thanks for your suggestion for the Under Armour and Smoked Meat gift boxes. I am all over it!
If I am getting tiresome like a bill collector, well good. I know you want to send some cards to our warriors. You have been great sending your money. It's just the busy time of year right now.
Here's the deal. This week end when you are buying groceries just stop by the greeting card isle and pick up a couple of $3.00 cards. Shoot me a P.M. for the address and put them in the mailbox. You will feel real good, but not as good as our two sergeants will when they open the Christmas boxes we are sending them and they get your card!

Our guys are not hard to please. It is amazing how important the little things are when you can't get them. Anybody know of a ham spread other than "deviled ham"?

Thanks everybody that responded with the Christmas cards!! I am spending some real money for some nice Christmas gifts for our Randall Warriors. Don't forget that when we have our next fund raiser. These go out tomorrow. If you feel a little guilty for not sending some cards, don't worry we all know you meant to. To assuage that guilt just sit down and write out a check to send to Rhett for the Randall Warrior fund. We are in this for the long run!

Yesterday we sent out four boxes of really fine Christmas goodies to our Randall Warriors. The boxes included the Christmas cards sent in by our members. I am attaching a photo of most of the Christmas gifts we sent. It may not look like a lot but it is the finest I could find from Central Market, the gourmet grocer in Dallas. I made sure the ex-dates would allow for a delayed delivery since we never know when our Warriors will receive it. My postmaster assured me that yesterday would get it there by Christmas. I received eight more Christmas cards after the boxes were sent so we will send two more boxes with those cards Saturday. The response by you guys for the Christmas cards was remarkable. I am proud to be associated with you! God bless our troops and Merry Christmas to the Randall Knife Society!

In the last ten months we have sent out a total of fifty-three (53) packages to four different Warriors. Two are back home and we continue to send to the other two, one in Iraq , Sgt. Abrams, and one in Afghanistan, Sgt. Jennings. Total expenditures to date are $2,125.74. Thanks to all of you who have been so generous. Please keep these men in your prayers and this project in your budget!

The attached link concerns a fellow soldier who served alongside myself and Sgt. Jennings in Iraq. It is with great sorrow I report that he was killed Wednesday in Afghanistan. He had been with us in the same unit for 12 years. Please keep his family in your prayers. http://sjedit.ny.publicus.com/article/20080104/NEWS/801040314

Wally,
We all mourn the loss of Sgt. Shawn Hill and will remember his family in our prayers. I am amazed how we keep producing so many heroes.
I was in a small town post office today mailing two packages to our Randall Warriors. Behind me an elderly lady stopped a young man in his early twenties to ask him how he and his family were doing. He replied that everyone was well. He then told her he was leaving in a few days for another 18 month tour of duty in Iraq. She was not able to speak but grabbed and hugged the young soldier like he was her own grandson.
From now on when I am delivering our packages to th post office I will remember that emotional exchange.
God Bless Our Troops!

Our two Randall Warriors are either home or on the way home. I have committed our efforts and funds to a Marine Sergent Major and an Army Staff Sergent going to Iraq in September.
What we need is the names and addresses of two other warriors in Iraq of Afghanistan now that will be returning about the same time our next two are arriving.
If you know of someone that fits that description and time line please send me a P.M.
Thanks for your help and donations!

Rhett forwarded an email from one of our fighting men in the sand box. He just responded to my email with his address and these request (see below). Here is where I need your special help. The main request is for magazines. I receive and pass along three of the NRA magazines every month but I could use your help if you subscribe or buy some of the other ones Sgt. Salazar is requesting. The U.S.P.S. has a flat rate Priority Mail box that can be mailed for $8.95 regardless of weight. It will hold a couple of dozen magazines. Please send your "pre-read" magazines to me and I will send them out to our Special Fighters. You could send them directly to the men but I like to put four or five in with other items as kind of a filler. Who wants to get a box full of reading material when a box of treats and necessities can be included in the same box? BTW, my barber gets all kinds of free magazine subscriptions and saves them for this project. That is another good resource (for those of you that get hair cuts). If you can help send me a P.M. and I will reply with my address. Quote:
Thank you for responding to my email. All of us appreciate the thanks and support you have offered. My guys aren't looking for any recognition though. We're all happy to be of service. I'm not really sure what to ask for. We are fairly well taken care of. If you are looking for things to send, books, and movies would be welcome, if they don't cost much. Magazines would be of use. Some interests people have are cars, motorcycles, flying (planes), computers, maybe even some travel type (so they can look at something other than dust!). Microwave popcorn is welcome. Maybe the plain or light types (orville or Newman's). I only say that because it seems like the buttery type tends to melt in the heat and soak through the package. I don't know if there is anything unique that any forum members like to include? My troops would be thankful for anything sent.
Thanks again for your support and please pass along my thanks to the members of the Randall Knife Society who have donated so generously. I may have to join your forum myself. I saw the special fighter knife which was donated previously. Very nice.
All the best,
SFC Manuel Salazar

Rocky, peel the address labels off of your magazines and send them to me in a flat rate USPS box. PM me for my mailing address.
Doug, I know a lot of the S.F.'s I know have either a small DVD player or a laptop with a DVD drive. I don't think VHS made it to the sandbox. Your movies will be appreciated and yes, please keep them "R rated" or less!
Thanks guys!

Thanks to everyone who sent the magazines and DVD's! We have enough magazines for now. If you have any DVD's you are tired of please send them and I will send them to the sandbox.
We have a new Special Fighter from the great state of Louisiana. That makes three we are sending packages. One is coming home in a couple of months and I have another going about the same time to take his place.
The news from Iraq has been very good. Join with me to pray it gets even better!

I want to thank everyone that responded to my call for help by sending magazines to go to our Special Fighters. We now have enough for several months so hold on to the ones you have now but please keep collecting them.
Many responded but one of our members went above and beyond the call! RKS member Cory Kappler sent literally dozens of brand new, just off the rack magazines of every interest. But most amazingly he sent dozens of movies on DVD's! Everything from new releases to timeless classics were included.
I thank you Cory and I know our Special Fighters will thank you when those "hit country"!
BRAVO!!!

I got an email today asking what we send. In the past it's been a little bit of everything but the Special Fighters pictured above ask for personal hygiene products. I bought what is pictured below today to send. It filled three regular sized flat rate boxes and one large flat rate box. I could have bought large size items to save money but I understand that with absolutely NO privacy it's nice to have your own stuff. It's worth the extra $$. Cost to the RKS Special Fighter fund? The toiletries cost $215. The DVD's and magazines donated by our members about $200. The postage to get it all to the sandbox about $40 for a total of $455 for four boxes. The toiletries do cost more than snacks, etc. but they get what they ask for and need! I hope everyone approves of how our money is being spent.

Tom, great job as usual, but may I make a humble suggestion?
In Vietnam, the VC and NVA could sniff us out by our cigarettes, our deodorant, and our soap. Crystal deodorant is fragrance and Paraben free, as well as having no damn Aluminum in it.
Tom, I will buy the deodorant next time...As long as it's Crystal. Maybe we can find a fragrance free soap also.

Thanks Dubie. If you can recommend a source I will get it next time. BTW, remember when you sent Sgt. Doug the leather food on his last deployment? He has a new guy in his unit that has a Randall #1 that he says needs some love. If you could send his enough for one grip he would appreciate it. He will be in Georgia (defending against the Russians ) for a couple more weeks. I will send you his address if you can help.

Consider it done. I will send him some Ren wax, along with some good leather nourishing food. Go ahead and put his address on the Forum, and maybe some good folks will send some goodies too. He needs to be reminded to keep it dry and out of the sheath whenever possible. The Renwax won't slow it down when he decapitates a greasy El Qaeda member. Dubie

Rhett advised names of our fighters should not be displayed in public so as not to compromise their security. I have also deleted his location. Quote:
Hi Tom, I'm sure you're wondering who this is, my name is [deleted] also known as SPC [deleted] and I'm a Soldier in the U.S. ARMY. I am currently on month 8 of a 15 month tour out here in Iraq. I am currently assigned to C1-17 FAR out of Fort Sill, OK. I am active army and work with a field artillery unit, specifically working with the M109 155mm Howitzers also known as the Paladins. Since field artillery isn't really used anymore due to urban combat being the type of combat seen these days, our mission out here is convoy security. We are currently working out of Camp [deleted], Iraq AKA [deleted] and we run convoys from the south all the way up to the central part of Iraq just north of baghdad. The south isn't too dangerous but the farther north you get around the baghdad area, the more dangerous it gets. Haven't really seen any combat action myself except for a small arms attack on our convoy thankfully. I somehow manage to avoid the IED's and EFP (explosively formed penetrator, the real killer out here) which I like to think is God looking out for me. Anyways, I'm catching myself going off on a tangent lol, so much to talk about concerning Iraq but I better make sure I have some stuff to talk about in future emails hehe. Well, I just got back from a mission yesterday morning and didn't have the chance to thank you for the packages via email before I left on the mission. I wrote a thank you letter and dropped in in the mail box which I hope you received, and also my rooomates sent you one as well. I received the 3 packages of jerky/sunflower seeds/tuna/crackers and magazines and want to say thank you for the awesome stuff inside of it. My 2 roomates who I share a trailer with don't really get any care packages from people, so since there was quite a bit of goods in there, I shared with them some of the jerky, tuna, crackers, and seeds. We all really loved it and still have a bit more of it to go through until it's been expended hehehe. I just wanted to make sure that you know how much it means to know people back in the states are thinking about us out here and don't forget about us. I really appreciate you taking the time and funds to put together 3 packages like you did, and want to let you know that it is appreciated. I just recently started using my camera on missions so hopefully I can send you some pictures shortly. My father, the one who you heard about me from, showed me a knife collectors forum which has a special fighter's section in it for troops deployed. I think that's really cool and hopefully later on tonight I can register an account and maybe post up some pictures from out here in Iraq of our missions and some of the sights out here to see. Unfortunately on my thumbdrive I only have six pictures but I'll send you a few of them for now. I need to load up the pics I took the other day of us doing a vehicle search on a suspected weapons smuggler from this last mission. Iraqis out here have been using caskets to transport rockets/rpgs/small arms weapons to and from locations. Well I had better get to work, here at the office right now, going to attach those pictures and send them your way. Just want to say thanks again though for all you did with those packages and it is appreciated! Can't say it enough how much it means to have people like you supporting us soldiers out here iraq. Well look forward to hearing back from you Tom, and expect more emails soon. Sincerely,

We received this in the mail today. I will be sending it along to Rhett to place in the RKS archives. I deleted the names on the certificate for the protection of our Special Fighters. It was brought to my attention, and rightfully so, that in the past I had inadvertently posted information that could be used against our Special Fighters. That will not happen again!

Obama can have one specially commissioned by the shop with the Presidential Seal of The United States when he goes over to "Talk" to the Iranian's. While he's at it he should have one made for North Korea. 2 for 1 sale!

Warren, the only way that rookie will have any cred, is if he DOES have a Randall on. Good Idea !!! You thought of it first. The problem is, If hussein O'sama is going to Iran to negotiate, we might as well K our A's Adios. Dubie Baxter

Dubie,
Not to worry, he'll send Biden. Dick Cheney may have been refered to as a "Hair Trigger Shotgun", but Sen. Biden is definitely a "Loose Cannon".

Not the Special Fighters we are sending packages to but I wanted to relay their message. These Fighters have rotated home by now, safely I pray. I found this photo when I was doing some research on what is needed by our guys and gals in the sandbox. Here is a website if you want to see what they need. Thanks for everything you have done to support our Special Fighter project!

Randall Knife Society member Cory Kappler has again hit one out of the park! Cory sent another 90+ DVD movies to send to our Special Fighters In Iraq and Afghanistan plus enough cash to pay for the postage.
I thank you Cory and I know our Special Fighters do too. Don't think you will mind me using your full name since you use it here on the forum. That is appreciated too.
OK forumites, let's hear it for Cory!

I don't mind you using my name, just make sure its the correct one. They call me Mister Tibbs! Sorry, with the Blockbuster reference that was the first movie quote that came to mind. Thanks for the props guys but its no big deal. Yes, I have a LOT of movies. More than most, not as much as others...at least thats how I look at it. 95% of the movies I've sent T the B are duplicates. Not duplicates liked DVD-R burned copies, but multiple versions of the same movie. You know the trappings of the main release and the inevitable extended cut special edition double dip a year later. Adding the Bluray version into the mix...I sometimes had 2 or 3 copies of the same thing. Take Crimson Tide. I had the standard dvd, then they had the extended cut version, then they released it on Bluray. Don't need 3 of same thing. I should thank Tom (aside from the enormous thanks he deserves for his continued efforts) for helping me clear up some shelf space. These movies don't do me any good, so they should go to someone who can put them to good use.

Dear Members of the Randall Knife Society, My name is Kelby Trant and I am a SPC in the ARMY (currently deployed to Iraq in support of OIF). I would like to take the time to say thank you all for the support you have shown in the past few months by sending care packages to my fellow comrades and I out here in Iraq. Thus far I've received a plentiful supply of food and personal hygiene products which was a big hit amongst the crew out here. It's really appreciated that ya'll take the time and money to ensure that we're taken care of out here in the desert. A little bit about our unit out here, C 1-17 FAR is based out of Fort Sill, OK and our mission out here in Iraq is convoy security. We've been out here for 9 months thus far and still have a little under six left to go. Not too much longer until we make it back to the states. We're an artillery unit but since they don't use artillery anymore really, they have us doing other tasks such as convoy security. I hope to get some pictures for anyone who's interested in C 1-17 FAR or who wants to know a little bit about Iraq. Just send me an email at KTrant81@yahoo.com or I can reply via this board for anyone. Hope you all have a great day and look forward to meeting some of you. Must say I'm not much of a knife or gun enthusiast (only know how to use a m16, m240b, m249, and a m2 lol) but do plan on picking up a couple firearms when I get back home to the states. Sincerely, SPC Trant, Kelby K. P.S. Special thanks to Tom Welch before I forget for sending the packages out here and ensuring they reach their target. It's a great program ya'll are running and just want to ensure ya'll know it's working good and it's appreciated. Kelby Trant

Sgt. Doug gave permission to post this:
Elections went very smooth. Had some vehicles carrying ballots roll thru the ECP. A curfew was in place in Baghdad, so it was meant to be smooth. The next few days while ballots are counted and results posted is what we are braced for. Just got back from the chow hall. They gave us two beers per an for the SuperBowl. nobody watched the game, slammed two beers and left. I must confess, they were damn good. Sorry for not writing more than a few lines lately, just busy as hell lately and time gets away from you. Boom count up to around 40. Hard to believe. Will be at Caddo in no time. Send the pic of your knife to Wilk, I told him abouit it tonight, we sat together and consumed. I look forward to the two of you meeting, he's a good man.

I should probably pm this but I'm just too lazy to figure out how, everyone forgive me... TTB I have the block of Cherry Micarta and plan on hand delivering it to the shop in May, tenatively for a #2-4... (Reduced hilt)
I've got two knives coming up in May and I'm going to go down to Orlando to pick them up and then to Odessa, to have the sheathes fitted. Visiting the shop is always a good excuse to order another knife! One of the ones I'm supposed to pick up is a #2-8, Silver by Doug Cream and Ivory courtesy of the good Captain... life is good...
I know this is the Special Fighter area, and I apoligize for taking up the space here when it's supposed to be about the American heroes getting the job done as we speak. God knows I love the military and my heart always goes out to those who stand on the wall every night. It truly is a helluva country!

I received the following email from one of my colleagues at the Department of Defense in connection with some of the work I do for them. To my mind it is a reaffirmation of how really special our Special Fighters' project is since we know that 100% of all the things and money we donate go to the troops with the only adminsitration expense being the actual cost of the shipping, and I am willing to bet that TTB frequently eats that expense. One more huge WELL DONE!! goes out to Rhett, TTB and all the folks who contribute time, money and stuff. You may want to note which "charities" received failing grades before you write a check to any organization besides our Special Fighters: Quote:
AMERICAN VETERAN'S CHARITIES - A SHAM!!
Americans gave millions of dollars in the past year to veterans charities designed to help troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, but several of the groups spent relatively little money on the wounded, according to a leading watchdog organization and federal tax filings.
Eight veterans charities, including some of the nation's largest, gave less than a third of the money raised to the causes they champion, far below the recommended standard, the American Institute of Philanthropy says in a report. One group passed along 1 cent for every dollar raised, the report says. Another paid its founder and his wife a combined $540,000 in compensation and benefits last year, a Washington Post analysis of tax filings showed.
Richard H. Esau Jr., executive director of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation, based in Annandale, said the cost of fundraising limits how much his group can spend on charitable causes. 'Do you have any idea how much money it costs to advertise? It's unbelievable the amount of money it takes to advertise in the print and electronic media,' he said. 'I'm very proud of what we do, and we certainly do look after everybody. The point is we do the right thing by veterans.'
Borochoff said many Veterans charities are 'woefully inefficient, ' spending large sums on costly direct-mail advertising. 'They over-solicit. They love to send out a lot of trinkets and stickers and greeting cards and flags and things that waste a lot of money that they get little return on,' said Borochoff, who plans to testify before Congress today.
The philanthropy institute gave F's to 12 of the 29 military charities reviewed and D's to eight. Five were awarded A-pluses, including the Fisher House Foundation in Rockville, which the institute says directs more than 90 percent of its income to charitable causes.
One group received an A, and one received an A-minus. Jim Weiskopf, spokesman for Fisher House, said the charity does not use direct-mail advertising. 'As soon as you do direct mail, your fund-raising expenses go up astronomically, ' he said.
One egregious example, Borochoff said, is Help Hospitalized Veterans, which was founded in 1971 by Roger Chapin, a veteran of the Army Finance Corps and a San Diego real estate developer. The charity, which provides therapeutic arts and crafts kits to hospitalized veterans, reported income of $71.3 million last year and spent about one-third of that money on charitable work, the philanthropy institute said.
In its tax filings, Help Hospitalized Veterans reported paying more than $4 million to direct-mail fundraising consultants. The group also has run television advertisements featuring actor Sam Waterston, game show host Pat Sajak and other celebrities.
Bennett Weiner, chief operating officer of the Better Business Bureau, said the agency has 20 standards for reviewing charities, including that a charity's fundraising and overhead costs not exceed 35 percent of total contributions.
The American Institute of Philanthropy, a leading charity watchdog, issued a report card this month for 29 veterans and military charities. Letter grades were based largely on the charities' fundraising costs and the percentage of money raised that was spent on charitable activities. The charities that received failing grades are in bold type.

On behalf of SSG Christopher Wilkinson I submitted a photo for the current Edo Excellence in Photography Contest. He actually sent two photos but said the one submitted was his favorite so I am posting the other one here. The camo knife case with the 124th Cav T-Patch was sent by you, the generous members of the Randall Knife Society. SSG Wilkinson was awarded the bronze star for his service to our country while serving in Iraq.

The nephew of a co-worker of mine is currently in the war zone. We will be sending packages to him and his troops going forward. He has 400 troops to share with so that should keep me busy but if you have a friend or relative there please send me the info. Quote:
I would be more than happy to accept care packages on behalf of soldiers here. I have always and will continue to be tremendously appreciative of anyone who wants to support my troops. I do have access to over 400 soldiers in my battalion alone. I have recently been moved to the Operations Sergeants Major position, so that gives me a pretty good picture of who can use what.
We do have an AAFES PX store here (kind of like a small Wal-Mart), so toiletry and every day items are easy to get. The things that seem to gain the appreciation of soldiers the most are snacks, candies, music cds, video games, board games, and movies. Magazines are good too. Not news magazines, but things like Guns and Ammo, or any type of motorcycle and car magazine. As strange as it may sound, newspapers like the Globe and Enquirer are good. With the holidays coming up, Christmas decorations would be good also.

Still pretty new to this forum and posted one under "Congrats. to T.W." Refer back to it if you want--has to do with Tom, Special Fighters, 11th hour-11th day-11th month and thoughts about small monetary giving en-mass from RKS members to honor and think about/thank all vets for all our freedoms and blessings.

Not sure what you are trying to do or why. You are not completing a thought or a sentence. Looks like spam to me and members that have alerting me to it. Send me a PM to explain if you wish.

TTB, howsabout bringing us up to speed on the soldiers, and the prospects for supporting another round of fine fighting Americans, in the future? I'm trying to plot another little way of chipping in...

NEED HELP!

I am in need of APO addresses for one or two fighters in the Afghanistan theater.
These guys & gals are taking the brunt of it now and need our support.
Not that the Fighters in Iraq are home free but from reports I have gotten from retuning Fighters most of what we have been sending to Iraq is becoming available there.
If you have attempted to send me an email over the last several weeks (month?) and have not had a reply it is because when I changed email servers only 20 or so addresses were "imported" from the old server out of 200+. I lost almost 200 addresses. And emails were not forwarded as promised. Be careful if you move to GMail.
If you can be of help please send me a Private Message.

Tom, How's the Special Fighter funds holding up? I have a project that should raise a couple of bucks just waiting for your go-ahead.

Rick,
I don't have access to the balance of the fund but I am sure Rhett will give us an update when he sees your inquiry.

I have received mailing info for a Special Fighter from Peter Kaufman. We will be sending boxes this weekend to his co-worker.
I want to acknowledge one of our members who has gone above and beyond the call.
Cory Kappler has been personally funding our cause for some time. He has sent to me hundreds of dollars worth of new magazines and DVD's as well as enough cash to forward them to our Special Fighters.
Please recognize Cory for his unselfish contributions.

Thanks Tom and Cory
My friend and coworker Mike's reserve unit was sent to Afghanistan recently, and I appreciate your efforts. I sent a box to Mike last week and hope to get an email from him when he receives it too.

A note received a few days ago from a Special Fighter in Afghanistan:
"Tom, I sent a thank you note to you today, I have to say how great the packages were. They without a doubt were the best we have ever got and my guys are ve4ry very thankful. The movies are a hit and the food stuff always goes over well.
I am trying to get a movies night started once a week so those will come in huge!
Again Tom I personally thank you and appreciate any and all you have done for me, my guys and fellow soldiers."
The movies the Sargent refers to were donated by Cory Kappler.

Today, May 21, is National Armed Forces Day. The day that honors our United States active military. To honor them, and to honor you guys that ponied up to send care packages to Iraq and Afghanistan Special Fighters a few years back, I brought this thread back to the top.
I hope and pray that most, if not all, of them are back home with their families.
Great job guys & gals!

Thanks Tom, for bringing this BTTT, and for all the work you did. Daggone, a lot of contributing, hunting and gathering......AND fund work, packing and shipping. Seem like, again, a large part of our country forgets day to day how many service men/women still man the wall. God bless 'em all.
