Great article in the October Knife magazine on the history of the Woodman's Pal, including the military survival kits. While not used as often in the boreal north, the Pal is almost a necessity in the eastern and southern states. The Pal is many times better than a machete or even an axe. With the sharp hook portion, you can cut through brush, vines and briars with ease. When I worked as a young forester, in the woods marking timber every day, I wouldn't be without my Woodman's Pal. I gave each of my grandsons one for their 12th birthday. If you've never had one, you might consider trying a Pal on your next forest adventure.

Thanks for the heads up pappy. These seem to be a topic of discuss every now and then online, and while it's and interesting design I've never felt the need to spend the money on one. Maybe I just need to read the article? Wouldn't mind hearing more of your experience with it pappy until I but the magazine

Pappy,

How about that? Seems that there is a Woodman's Pal just under the edge of my bed next to an 870 with a pistol grip and close to a Kimber 1911 45 acp. Who'da thought it?

I first ran across the Pal in 1964, when I saw one being used by a survey crew in Louisiana marking a property boundary. Way better than a machete and more handy than a hatchet. Unless you are cutting small trees over 3" diameter, the Pal works much better. I once used mine to cut a new trail through some terrible brush, vines and briars in Louisiana, an amazing tool. I prefer the one with the stacked leather handle and guard.

Mike--

I saw the Knife Magazine article.

Never owned a Woodsman's Pal.

How do you use the hook part?

It's good to clear the wait-a-minute (thorny) vines.

You turn the blade sideways and use yoleft hand to hold the vines or brush, then use the hook blade to cut near the ground. Once you get the hang of it, you'll wonder how you got along without it.

I was given a very used one (no idea how old) without a sheath in 1969 by my Uncle. I bought a sheath for it about 6-7 years ago.

Nice one Tom. They come in different lengths, yours is 14 1/2", the same as mine only not marked as such. I have a couple of them including a mint WW II with original canvas sheath, stone and instructions.
