LarryWW, I agree about the 44 spl but I would go one bigger like a nice single shot 16 ga with the bbl cut back to 18".
I have heard about Laborador retrievers being caught by 'gators in LA while retrieving ducks and that most duck hunters there also bring along a rifle or handgun to hopefully prevent that.

Good one Wayne! Its truly amazing how some animals are able to swallow another animal whole without dismantling. I watched many seagulls capture a live flounder at dead low tide, and peck at the body on the beach breaking the vertebrate then swallowing in one gulp. Its quite something to see. Saw one swallow an eel too, just like spaghetti.
I saw a rattler eat a large rat once. I could not believe how it 'disengaged" it's jaw and swallowed the entire rat. By the way,I call rattlesnakes "buzzworms" I picked the phrase up when I was reading an article in The Blue Press.
I like my little .44 special!! you can load up the newer guns to .44 magnum speed if you want, but who would...I load it down, for greater control. BUT, I think that I too would prefer a shotgun, if I was defending myself against a gator...one with a lot of available rounds...not sure I'd feel comfortable until I was out of ammo... I'm just say'n :-)Rocky
Wayne, The bullets you see have 4.5 grns of Trail Boss in them, with a 185 grn lead projectile...very comfortable to shoot!! now for the Randall....I'll have to give that some thought!! :-)Rocky
