I have a #14 (heavy), I know this knife was a Randall shop mistake. I also know less than 100 were made and most of them never left the Randall shop. Does anyone know what this #14 (heavy) would be worth? I am thinking of selling it.
Thanks,
Neil

Howdy Neil and Welcome!
I'm sure we could help you but you need to post some images of the knife. If you don't know how, send the pics to me at RBscrim@aol.com and I'll be happy to post them for you.

Let me get some pictures and get them posted. The knife has a border patrol handle with the forward curve nickel silver hilt. It is a beautiful knife.

Neil,

Once you figure out how much you want for the knife, we'd be interested in purchasing it from you (my wife and I)...and will pay the $2 listing fee to Rhett as well.

As you know, your knife is somewhat rare...as to its value, I don't have a clue; but, you should be able to find a buyer here if your asking price is too high for us...

Neil, Welcome to the Forum. On unusual Randall Knives I'm sure that Rhett, Rick and most of the other folks here would agree that if you are in the market to sell, eBay is most likely to bring you the greatest exposure and therefore the highest prices. Most of us here will sell on eBay for exactly that reason. If two or more collectors have a hankering for the same knife, there's no telling what might happen. It's a little different for the more "standard" Randalls, but even then we (the folks who post here) are sometimes mighty surprised and how much a nice Randall sells for.

Regards, Doug

Neil,
As Doug said, eBay is by far the best way to go to get the most exposure and the best price. Personally, I wouldn't entertain any offers until we look at it. Here on the RKS forum, we are fortunate to have the contributions of a veritable who's-who in Randall Knives including the Randall shop foreman, the president of the Randall Knife Society, a couple of authorized Randall dealers, several of the most well respected knife purveyors on the planet and many notable collectors. We even have the author of an upcoming book on Randall knives who should certainly know an approximate market value for your knife. So let's see some pics!

The #14 (heavy) is a #14 which the Randall shop grabbed the wrong bar stock (larger than 1/4") and ground it into the #14. Randall did not know what happened until a knife was next to a regular #14 (1/4" bar stock). Like I said the Randall shop told me this when I was in the shop. They said less than 100 were made and most of them never left the shop. In fact some are on display in the Randall shop.

The problem with any appraisal on your knife is that there is no way to benchmark it. How many of these have sold on e-bay since they were made? Everyone's input is going to be a WAG. I would suggest to go ahead and get some inputs and then come up with a "reserve" price for an e-bay auction that you would be overjoyed to get if it sold. If it sells for that or more, then it's all upside. If it doesn't, then you will know it's market value and you can put it up again with a lower reserve. The only downside is e-bay's fees that you'll pay for setting a reserve price. IMO this is (1) cheap insurance against not leaving any money on the table and (2) a reasonable fee for learning it's real market value. If you do put it up on e-bay, try to include a pic of the thinkness of your knife vs. a standard 14.
