Hi everyone. I am taking a trip to FL to help my daughter out. I am taking my model 18 7 1/2 with a carbon steel blade. I want to put a coat of wax on it to prevent rust. I can't seem to find the wax that everyone talks about here in the forum, and I don't have time to order on-line before I leave.
The question I have is, will any wax do the job?? I have Johnsons paste wax, and numorus different car and motorcycle wax's here. Will any of them do the job? Thanks in advance for any help.

Allen

Allen I think Johnson's floor wax would do the job for you. Might be a little trouble to clean off when you return. You could always take a can of WD-40 and give it a quick spray and wipe down each day, take only a few minutes if you have that to spare.

WD-40 works if you dont mind to spray now and then.

Allen;

Years ago an old machinist taught me that a block of Camphor can be broken up and the pieces placed in tool box drawers to prevent rust on precision tools and measuring instruments. Camphor blocks are available at most drug stores. The Camphor slowly evaporates and re-condenses on any metal surfaces where it forms a thin anti-rust coating.

Another possibility is finding VPI paper that the military uses to protect stuff from rusting and corrosion. It is named "Vapor Phase Inhibitor".

Neil,

Your machinist friend was correct. Along with many other uses,Camphor is or at least is an acceptable form of rust preventative. Wiki confirms this.

"Uses

Modern uses include camphor as a plasticizer for nitrocellulose (see Celluloid), as a moth repellent, as an antimicrobial substance, in embalming, and in fireworks. Solid camphor releases fumes that form a rust-preventative coating, and is therefore stored in tool chests to protect tools against rust.[7]"

I've got a huge Camphor tree in my yard. It looks like a live oak but smells like camphor. I wonder....hmmmm. Good tip, Thanks.

I would drive down from TN., and help you trim your tree. But who will guard your Camphor tree at night. We could fend off unwelcome's with a Festivus pole.
