The indexing (two lines towards the top) is largely based on elk-sized target, so I'm thinking a rifle for that purpose (bonus in that I live in "elk country"). I have a .270 that'll do but I'm thinking about going .30-06 instead.

30-06 sounds like a great set up for that scope.

Rob I may have dreamt this up! Those parallel lines at the top define a measurement, ie) 12 inches or ?, when setting the scope on a predetermined power. Knowing the measurement between a certain part of an animal is 12" or ?, fit that part of the animal between the two lines and bring the scope into focus. Then read the distance on the scale on the bottom. Again this idea may have been brought on by a vivid dream or 70+ years of imagination!

Rod, Imagination is a good thing!!
Nice choice for the 30-06 in my opinion it is the standard which others are judged.
I am probably wrong on this but I bet that over the years, more big game has been taken by that cartridge than most others.
165 to 180 grain seems to be the most popular choice.
I presume you reload???

Rod, you're very close. The two lines at top are for the the target, "shoulder to brisket" on an elk-sized target. I haven't gotten close enough to an elk to whip out the measuring tape, but I'd guess it to be in the 30" ballpark.
Get those two lines on the target, you zoom the power in/out so that the lines just touch each end of the critter.
Read the tombstone, lowest number. Turn the elevation turret to that setting.
center cross-hairs, adjust power, fire.
There were four different turret caps, A-D (The "D" cap was for lower-power loads, doesn't really factor into this), each with a chart of assorted calibers, pill size, muzzle velocity. I only have the "A" cap, so I may end up needing to run a dope card for the last step.
I have all the gear and supplies to reload for 25-06, 30-06 (M1 Garand), 308 (M14), 30 Carbine, and 44 Mag (Marlin 1894). Surprisingly (OK, not that surprising), the last two happily use the same powder. The first three have some overlap, but not ideal to use same for any two.
So far the only thing I've pressed together was 25-06 for the flatlander rifle, working up loads and ladder-charting it out.

Thanks Rob. I had read about the reticle many years ago and based my post on what my ageing memory had remembered. Good luck with the elk hunt. My cousin is hunting elk in NM, with a bow. I gave him my Model 8 RMK. Hope he gets some blood on that knife.

Rod, That Model 8 is the old style or the newer style? I have had the old style model 8 for many years.
I just returned from my annual trip to my cabin up in Maine on the Canadian border. A 638 lb black bear was harvested (not by me) and I think it may be a state record.

It is a newer style Model 8. I don't have many RMK that are not Model 5's. I picked the one, of my non 5's, that would be best for elk, and gave it to him. Hopefully I will get some pics, if he is successful.

Rod, Where will he be hunting for elk???
If I am not mistaken, the outdoorsman,Bradford Angier, designed the Model 5. I was always thinking of getting one but,for my needs, the old style Model 8 is more than enough.
Squirrels, rabbits, birds are my game when I go out on "safari" My usual go to piece is a very old Savage/Stevens Model 24 22lr/410 O/U.

Eh, rare is it for a thread to survive a dozen posts.
It's good that the direction of the hijack trended towards blades.

Wandering back a little bit toward scopes, but not Redfield. I recently bought a Vortex Viper PST-3151 at the Tulsa show. When I got home, I realized the Power Adjustment Ring was really hard to turn. I sent it to Vortex under their We Got Your Back warranty and described the problem. Within one week, I received a brand new replacement. They paid shipping both ways and no charge to me for anything. Great Warranty!

Although I still don't fully understand the description of how to use this reticle Apologies for missing this question until now. When you zoom in/out, the target size changes, as well as the tombstone at the bottom right. Here's a shot of it zoomed in a bit while looking out the same office window as above. You come across an elk, you line up the two two horizontal lines and work the zoom until the elk fits between them (shoulder touching the top line, breastbone touching the bottom line). When you're done working the zoom for fit, read the bottom of the tombstone. In the above pic (assuming I fit an elk in the lines), that would be 350. Here's a screenshot of the first two pages of the fold-out flyer. Note the location of Mr. Critter between the first two lines. After that, turn the top turret, elevation, to the tick mark between "3" and "4" and we're on-target for that distance. In theory.

Thats a really great warranty!
Did they say what caused the ring to be stiff? In the box with the new scope was a note Replaced due to a delaminated reticle. Not sure what that meant.

I think I will still stick with iron sights.
The game I hunt now a days (rabbits, squirrels) I really do not need a scope and my old Savage Model 24 22lr/410 does quite well.
I no longer hunt deer but am quite content to go into the forest and sit down on my "custom stand" Which is basically a flat rock on an old rock wall and I place my inflatable LL Bean seat pad on.
There I wait for the game to come to me instead of me chasing around in the woods and getting nowhere!

Shoot, Running up and down hill & dale is for the younger folks.
I just sit and wait for the game to (hopefully) come to me.
In a bit,I will be going down to my old PD to qualify for my nation permit that I do each year.
No sweat,.................I designed the course

I use my Glock 43. It is just a short off-duty type course with max distance of 15 yards with most of the strings fired and more realistic self defense distances.
Some time back (ooops another serious thread drift here) NYPD did a study of 6000 slf defense shootings over a ten year period of time. Virtually all were less than 21 ft and most were less than 10 ft with the majority less than that.
OK,now back to the scope issue Wayne
