Doug, the arrowhead makes sense to me too. When the hollow handle boom hit in the 80s, it was common to hear of converting the knife into a spear, which is not a good idea. The arrowhead gives you another option. These survival kits are fun to put together. Mine weighs heavy on the fire starter side.

Ben, thanks for the post.

A super nice 15/18, Tom - or is it an 18/15? smile
Anyway, I think it's great!

Good question, Peter. I guess it depends on if it's pointing left or right. grin

To me, it's an Airman with a hollow handle. As with any knife, the blade should be what identifies the model. Here's another example, most people (even the shop grin) consider this knife to be a Model 14 with sawteeth, but it's actually a Model 18/14. grin

...a really interesting theme smile
Does anybody know roughly how many of these "15/18 Airman-Survival" were produced?
I find them very attractive laugh

The seller told me about 90 were made with the Airman blade. There are other models with hollow handles out there as well. There is even a 50th Anniversary blade with a hollow handle.

Thanks, Tom. It seems like an ideal combination to me.
I'm not sure if other blades work as well with the hollow (and round) handle.

But with only 90 made I guess the chances of getting one aren't too big frown
And then think of using it laugh

Peter,

If you're interested, you can see a lot more hollow handle variants on Mitchell's website in the 1991 Green Crider Catalog.
