I am pretty much agreeable with you Graham.
The handed finger grips will show the figure of the wood better I think. I have a knife coming yet this year with ironwood and left-hand finger grips and I think that will really highlight the grain.
I would go with the wrist thong over etching

The idea of FGs on this knife would look OK to me if they are "Under" the handle and "Light." Sometimes the FGs are very pronounced and wrapped around the handle in a way that is not suitable for some users' hand sizes and gripping styles.

I have had custom pistol grips made where the maker worked from the actual outline and dimensions of my hand, but those grips would not be comfortable for every other shooter who might use the gun. Similarly, if deep and pronounced FGs are put on a knife handle they won't necessarily match up to the hand size and grip style of all users.

Something to think about as tradeoffs are made.
