New to this community and 1st post. What a valuable wealth of knowledge and great collections!
From what I have read, the “SS” stamp preceded single “S” stamps. Also, Johnson Brown Button sheaths preceded Baby Dots.
The 1st pic shows a 3-7, single low “S” with a JBB and the 2nd shows an 8-4, “SS” with a Johnson Baby Dot.
Question: Is this probably a case where the version of the sheath and age of the knife stamp are a slight mismatch or am I off base? It’s not difficult to imagine this happening during periods of transition. The 3-7 is from the Picture Gallery in 2006, by Bo Blade; the 8-4 is one of the first knives in my small collection.

GREAT knives!!
The baby dot does NOT belong to the 'SS' bladed knife.

I'm not an expert but a quick look at Crutchtip's site puts SS in the 63/64 time frame. I think baby dots began maybe 64/65? Seems to me like a late SS might have ended up in an early baby dot.

Yes, the 8-4 sheath is probably the right one. I have a SS 7-5 that came with baby dot sheath.

Reading that authentication is confusing. Pete says the top quillion was removed and the stag handle "sanded down". By who? The shop, or is he inferring the knife has been altered after it left the shop?

Some of your guys need to brush up on this stuff!

Johnson brown button sheaths were not made for but a short time the best I can ascertain, perhaps not more than 6 month from mid to late 1962 to early 1963 when Maurice Johnson switched to baby dot snaps.

Many of the period you see with brown buttons are HKL, the last incarnation of the HH Heiser company.

The baby dot for the 8-4 is totally correct. The double brown button for a low "S" could also be correct. Granted, most we would assume would have been used up by 1964, but it is obvious in this case, at least to me, there was one lingering.

Here is an HKL with both:

My first Model 1 arrived the summer of 1965 and it had the double brown button sheath as well.

Mike...Could you provide some additional information about your statement that the Baby Dot does not belong?
