Hi Jerry
Each authorized Randall dealer received five standard model 28s in late December. I happen to buy from a number of different dealers, and one of them had several model 28's not yet spoken for, so I yelled, I want one. With a swipe of a credit card, one was on it's way to me:)

Well I got mine courtesy of Capt Chris and his "Are we all considering a Woodsman" thread in the Tents-N-Trails section.
It just arrived today and the sheath is already hanging off my hunting belt. I think it might stay there permanently.

I think its about time somebody wrote up a short history of the #28 and placed it at the start of this thread. Then a permanent link in the "Knives of the week Model’s #1-#27 by Kevin Lough" thread with an amendment to #1-#28

From my newly arrived RKS News Letter, I understand "we the people" will get a shot at owning an off the shelf #28 Woodsman (Woodsperson) come February 22. My question, just what kind of Sheath will come Standard? The only picture posted here of a sheath show a "Pouch" without a hone. That's actually very nice but the RKS #5 had a more traditional sheath with hone. So does someone know just how it will come from Randall?

The standard sheath for the #28 is a no-hone sheath with diagonal keeper strap.

Look at the photo, on this very page, of Graham's (Ausblade) Model #28. It shows a knife he just received from me and the sale knives for Feb., 22 will be exactly the same, including the sheath pictured in that photo.
Best, Capt. Chris
PS: We posted the shop's announcement both here on on the "Randall Shop News" forum long before the newsletter came out...CCS

Thanks Captain, the "pouch" sheath is nicer IMHO but the new Woodsman #28 is one nice "outdoorsman" type knife. I guess I don't keep up enough, being a really small time Randall guy. I did luck out and found out about "your" Mission Memorial Knife (lucky me)!

PS: We posted the shop's announcement both here on on the "Randall Shop News" forum long before the newsletter came out...CCS

I wonder just how many lucky people will get one come Tuesday morning? Anyone know how many Randall will have? I was sort of set to get one but an AR Bushy Predator followed me home last month. Seems the market for Randall knives is very good for buyers but not sellers on Ebay. Again, Ebay is not the guarantee of profit on a Randall it once was. I did sell one of my Trapper #25-6 and made a few bucks but seems to be a better time to buy Randalls now.

Not big time like some here, got 4 Randalls now. Only one would I sell of those someday. As always for the last 10 or 12 years I got one "a comin" a Mission Memorial. Afraid if I get up and in the Woodsman line the wife just might figure out how to use that there Predator rifle.

Anyway best of luck to those who plan on the phone Randall game this week, it's a very nice looking knife. Seems like a new RKS Club knife should be just around the corner?

Redial, my man, redial. Been trying since 6:59a. Tap, tap, tapping away on the computer and reaching over and hitting redial every now and again. I literally said "this is the last time" when instead of a busy tone, got a click and a person. Go figure.

They said shipping within 2-3 weeks. UPS signature required.

I tried for an hour ... 7:00 - 8:00 ... with two phones ... no luck ...
had to get to work, so I got in the car and when I stopped at a light, tried again ... 3 times ...
on the third time, around 8:20 ... IT RANG! It was Gary ... for someone who's been dealing with people,
non-stop since 7:00AM ...HE WAS JUST SO PLEASANT ... I didn't tell him how long I was trying,
or anything like that ... gave him my info ... and he thanks me for the order and that he appreciated that I kept
trying until I got through!!!!!

I guess I'm living right... slept late after coming home from 3rd shift at 4am... made 42 attempts from 8:31 to 8:38, and still managed to score! They had to be almost all gone by then. Hats off to the shop, for giving everyone a fair shot!

I was dialing at 7:00 on the nose and had my wife dialing also. She finally got through at about 7:35. You know it was crazy on Randall's end. I thought I might wear out the redial button on my phone. Each call and busy signal took three seconds. We must have called at least 60-70 times each. Sorry for all that were to late.

As noted above, I was successful in getting through this morning. After reading the posts above, I went back to my email and counted up the number of dialing attempts (phone/email integrated at work, it keeps track of it)...

253 tries.

So... just curious. If you got through, did you buy one or two? What are you gonna do with the second one? Gift to family? Gift to friend? Stick it in the safe for a rainy day? Sell it on eBay and try to get both of them for close to free?

Another one of the unlucky here.

Got to work a bit early so at 0700 could start trying. No lie, was asked to respond to an emergency at 0658. I can't make this stuff up.

Tried numerous times (>100), finally got through at 0908, a pleasant person stated they sold out around 9am. Scott told me last week there was 160 to sell.

Maybe I'll have better luck with the stock sale. Congrats to all who got through- the knife is beautiful.

For me it's 2 lucky grand boys, or maybe one lucky grand boy, or maybe Pap and Memaw and no grand boys until we croak and then they get them all anyway. Haven't decided yet, but they will be users. I don't have many safe queens. Randalls were made to be used; the hardest thing is to decide which one to use. I got up at 5am mountain time and dialed for 30 minutes straight, then went back to sleep. Woke up at 7:30 and dialed 4 times and got Gary. Poor guy had a cold to boot, so he put his time in for sure. We talked a minute or so about retirement. He and I both said we were having too much fun to retire just now, plus I need the extra money for more Randalls!!

I bought one, and I feel lucky to have gotten it! I don't know yet if I'll make a user out of it, or not. The very first RMK I ever bought I carried around the world, and it was 8-10 years after I bought that first one before I bought another. Now I really just buy 'em because I like 'em!

I'm sure not going to count how many times I hit redial on my 3 office lines and my cell phone to get an answer sometime around 0915, to learn that "all gone". I began trying about 0715---Right now I can't imagine anything else (material)that I would have stayed on the phone lines for while trying to work at the same time. Randall Knife guys are CRAZY!!

Hi folks. My first post! Got to set up my profile etc. yet. This is a great site! I did get in on the big "phone-in" Monday. Started at home using re-dial for a solid half hour. Then had to drive my daughter to her school bus...after, pulled over and used the cell phone. Got through at 07:44! Not sure who I spoke to, but it was a good experience. Not usually lucky on these things...extra deer tags etc. Usually sold out by the time I get through...so I was thrilled. Only took one and it will be a user. Cheers! Tony,

Thanks for the greeting. Great use of eh! You must have some Canadian blood! Yes, the Woodsman may become a favourite, but it will face fierce competition from a 4" stag Alaskan. Love that Alaskan, not much that it is not good at. The woodsman, with a 3/16" thick stainless blade, drop point and near indestructible handle will be a hoot on outdoors adventures.

My order arrived yesterday evening, and as you would expect - top notch workmanship, fit and finish. Just a tough looking knife that will see a lot of use.

What a great opportunity...

Great to hear that all you guys got your Woodsman. Since I had just bought a new 23 I couldn't take advantage of the offer. The way everyone sounds I'll have to add it to my "Want" list. Enjoy them they sound like great users.

Thought you guys might appreciate this… Model 28s showed up today… UPS was thoughtful enough to call my wife last night to say “A package from RANDALL MADE KNIVES will arrive tomorrow and it must be signed for”. <sigh…>

Yep, that’s the Denmark Special I picked up on Craig’s List. Quite the nice little opener.

Guys,

I'm pumped on this one! I've been charting this on a map. Watching how the deliveries are happening. 24th Bob in Fla, 25th Spartanburg SC and Georgia deliveries, 26th North Cacalacky - take it to be North Carolina, 26th Glen Head NY - take it as Long Island. I'm waiting for Ogdensburg NY!

No luck today, because of a vicious snowstorm. Was dozing off and dreaming....pictured a UPS truck going off the road in the Adirondacks, ice! Driver trapped inside. He smells smoke. After initial panic he regains his senses and searches for an escape route, to no avail. Ah! There must be something in these packages. Luckily he finds a Randall Made Knife...the "Woodsman"!! The driver quickly realizes this is his way out. He handily rips open the metal carcass of the truck with the well crafted knife and escapes to freedom and his loving family. Weeks later the truck driver visits the intended recipient of the knife to deliver it...but he has a question. With all that happened, would the owner consider selling it to him??? Response...Ah?????, NO! Just kiddin, but I would tell him he has to wait 5 years. It builds character..he he.

Sorry guys ran off at the mouth with the typing. Just really excited and THANKFUL for this opportunity. How else can someone have this much fun spending 400$

Guido,
All of this initial offering were the green micarta and brass single hilt to the best of my knowledge. My Doctor (and Gary's) received a special black micarta one and has already skinned deer and hogs with it! My user is going to be a black one with nickel silver hilt, black sheath (or one of Greg's pouch sheaths) and my name etched on it! I have to wait a bit for that one as a whole bunch of folks are ahead of me...but huntin' season's a ways off.
I just got back from Bama (last night...late). Picked up all 3 whitetails from the processor. Can't wait for next year. My "Woodsman" will see some use!
Best, Capt. Chris

I like the looks of the pouch, I bet it's a bit more user friendly. I got my #28 Thursday evening, it looks like a genuine workhorse. You could probably hammer a half dozen of them into a tree for steps up to your deerstand! (I'll try to be a bit more reasonable with mine)

The false edge going into the drop point establishes a blade profile that you can't really appreciate until you have one in your hand. The blade appears much stronger in person than in photos I'd seen. I may go for a walk in the woods today, looking for deer sheds, with a new 28 on my hip!

I reveived my #28 today via USPS. I am really impressed. This #28 could really be the new go-to "camp" knife good for almost any job, hunting or fishing. The drop point and thumb notches feel super good. This is one great user Randall for sure.

My Woodsman was in Ogdensberg on Monday, picked it up Tuesday. Wow, what a knife! Have been busy this week with the maple sap run. The weather is as perfect as it gets and have had my Woodsman on the whole time. Will attempt to attach pics...

Hey folks tried to attach some photos. However, they were all a bit over sized except the one of my dog. I will review Rhett's "How to enter photos" posting. The other problem I am having is that when I try converting them from the raw files which are huge, the Nikon program will only allow me 640 X 426 as a minimum...which for the knife photos translated to greater than 100KB.

If you have a Windows machine, go to the Windows website and search for the picture resizer powertoy. I am not sure if it works for all versions, but it does for XP and that is generally what I use to resize. Otherwise IRFANVIEW is a really good photo manipulation software you can download for personal use for free.
Hope this helps and enjoy your Woodsman.

Norm,

Send the photo (or photos) to me (lunde@adobe.com), and can either adjust them so that they are under 100,000 bytes then return them, or can host them for you. If you feel that they need some work, it is best to send to me the highest resolution you have, such as the photos just as they came off of your digital camera.

Here's a surprise gift that came in the mail yesterday from my "little" brother Jere in Charlotte.

He is now officially forgiven for the time in 1960 that he hid behind the front seat of my car and waited till I had driven a few minutes from the house, had the AM radio turned up full blast, and then reached around and strangled me while screaming "bloody murder".

Hey Norm,
Nice pics!
Funny coincidence ... while skiing and snowshoeing a few weeks ago, 26 miles north of Quebec City,
I saw large cat-like prints in the snow ... even around our ski house one morning!
I guessed they might be lynx ... asked a local and he confirmed it! Never acually saw one in the wild ... yet!

That's great news. I have a second one coming in the same configuration as yours from the same one-day sale. Maybe that means that mine will ship next week.

It may have something to do with the #28 not having a Stag handle. cool

I have to agree with you Mike, even though it's a micarta handled knife I would want to see it. After all, it's a RANDALL!!!!!!!!!

Michael, Kevin and Ken......just got home and opened it up and it is a beauty (even without stag) for sure. It has a NS hilt, green macarta handle and a black sheath. Acutally I had only seen pics of them and it is a bit smaller than I imagined which is great also. A fine user for sure!

Probably should have delayed the Margarita and opened it ASAP. grin

Tom,

Right there with you. Just got back from the shop and am currently admiring my #28 Nickel Silver with Black Micarta with a margarita. She's a beaut. I hope my oldest boy appreciates it. Planning on giving it to him next year when he crosses over to Boy Scouts. Will try to post pics tomorrow. Again congrats and enjoy!!

While the 2006 vintage is sold out, and I still have eleven bottles, the 2007 vintage was just released, and I ordered a case late last week. I paid more than I did for my #28, but it was worth it.

Ken,

Enjoy it in Good Health. I appreciate a fine cabernet as well and California produces some of the best.

One of the best reds I have ever tasted was a Bersano Barolo, that was many years ago but I still remember it.

For an incredibly good moderately priced red wine, 2005 Finca Flichman Red Table Wine Paisaje de Tupungato from Argentina. If you ever have the chance, try it, you will enjoy it.

There should be a wine thread in the lounge.

I guess we are really off topic here.

My model 28 just got a buddy, green micarta, nickel silver hilt and waxed left hand sheath.

Also, I got a X'd out 28 sheath at the Blade show with the purpose of modifying it so it could be mounted on the shoulder strap of a back pack. I tore it apart and mounted a Tek-Lok on the back so it can be carried on the waist belt as a high ride or on the pack strap. It looks a little rough as I changed my mind several times as I was modifying it.

A real purty one. Any other color micarta slabs available on the #28 besides black and green?

Apparently not. The current word from RMK is that CW handle material is not being accepted for the #28, which means that the handle material is a binary condition.

Just Arrived:

Model 28, Nickel Silver/ Black Micarta
Very Nice Balance, flawless production, razor sharp edge.

Should be right at home in the field, kitchen, or tactical rig. Solid as a rock with a very good blade that looks capable of just about anything with a size that can be used daily.

To the best of my knowledge this is the first engraved model #28. This example is number #140 of David Perdue's work on Randall knives.

I bought a Model #28 for my brother-in-law for his 65th Birthday. He "broke it in right" today on a 7 point Michigan
Buck. He was hunting with a couple of "professional hunters" and both of them commented on what a nice knife he had for the job.

Another Randall Knife user, VERY happy, with his First Randall Made Knife.

Thanks Gary, Jason, and the rest of the Randall crew for making his day.

I may break my 28 out and use it for a deer knife. I was using a Puma. Put it up and started using a Browning which works very well but since I have this 28 why not.

If I was ordering a #28 today, I would order a NS hilt/flat top and a black micarta handle, with a black waxed sheath. Of course, a pouch sheath if possible.

Can you get a black waxed sheath? I thought they were only in brown?

I had two model 28s, but my #2 son liked one. He carries it along with Model 18 7.5 or his Model 12 Sportsman with a fighter hilt.

Luckily, I still have the other one with a high ride waxed sheath and the regular sheath (just like Tony's). Tony sure has good taste.

Mine is turning into one of my favorite trout fishing knives.

And there he is, page 9, right between the sausages and the Lynx, moving things around and keeping the thread focused on Model #28.....daggone it.. sorry Rhett, lost focus. Can't believe I haven't posted pic. of my #28. I do love that blade and it has been #1 on the spot on 7 bucks now. I'll post up next week. What an outstanding knife.

An "old" thread.... but I think that a #28 with a Nickel-Silver-Hilt and a black micarta handel will be my second Randall......

Tried dressing up a Model 28. Asked engraver to keep it simple, like the knife. Not much you can do to this model. Maybe a custom sheath..

Super nice. All you need is an exotic skin pouch sheath and you'll be all set. Who was the engraver?

My thoughts exactly Mike. I think I'll send it to Kenny Rowe and ask him to come up with something for me.

The engraver was:
Paul Markow
Huntsville, AL.
(256) 513-9790 > paul.markow@gmail.com

Left it with him at the Florida Knifemakers show in October. Had it back in my hands within 10 days of the show. Reasonably priced too.

Michael,

Your #28 looks great. I never would have thought to put engraving on such a utilitarian model, but I really like it! A simple black Randall sheath would look classy too.

No problem there Steve. That was funny smile

Tom,
Thank you Sir. It came with a black RMK sheath, just trying to fancy it up.
Rick Bowles posted a picture sometime back where he had a 28 engraved. I always thought it was a cool look for such a plain knife.

Thanks guys. After making some RMK purchases recently of new knives, searching for more info turned up this great forum. I recognized one name immediately from the Colt forum and was very pleased. Much like Colt collecting, I’m seeing that in RMK there is basic knowledge to get started and there is a great deal of in depth detail that takes years of involvement and experience to obtain.

Does anyone know why you can’t get a square top single hilt on a Model 28 ?

Coach,

My guess would be the 28 was always supposed to be the big brother to the RKS5 which never had a square hilt. That's why options are few.

Thanks Warren.

Just about every Randall Knife I have, has a square top single hilt.

When I tried to order a #28 with a square top single hilt, the shop said “NO”.

Just wonderin’. I even have a Clinton Special that has a square top single hilt.

???

We actually try to keep the options on the newer knives to a minimum...at least till we get it in our systems that THIS is what this particular knife is supposed to look like...this may be an option at a later date...then again...(see the model #25)

I have ordered only one square-top, thinking it would be more attractive than the standard hilt. I think I prefer the standard shape, and sort of regret that I didn't stay with it on this little RMK.

The 21 was Pete's favorite, at least that's what he told me. He used a custom neck lanyard, assume from Johnson.

You're probably not interested "BUT" I just posted this knife to my website and it sold in "3" minutes.
Point being: I can make you the #21 you wish with this CW...& I'd even work a trade!

As a note of interest...I believe you'll notice that ALL the knives that I mentioned had T/N as a standard option "back in the day"...man!, I'm much too young to be using that term again!!!

Thumb notches used to equal squared hilt...

I looked at the RMK site for this already but wondering what options available for the #28? (if there is something I missed)

Thanks for any information.

The one I used to own. Did dress out this doe in our late season with it. Worked great.

I just received a black micarta model 28 (with black sheath and brass hilt) that I ordered for my son-in-law, as a gift for Christmas 2022. (He is an Air Force Captain.)

Holding it got me thinking, had anyone else customized their model 28? Perhaps a re-handle?

After searching this thread the only thing I found was Mr. Bowles engraved 28. So, I thought I would ask- has anyone else seen a custom model 28 out there?

Best regards,
Mindelsee

DW that is very unique. Thank you!

I am thinking of a resin ivory handle with a scrim...

Mindelsee,

Bear in mind that the model 28 is a full-tang model. So, after buying the resin ivory at around $50 from David Warther, one will have to spend another $40-$50 to have it slotted. Then, sending the slotted resin ivory to an Authorized Randall Dealer (@$10) to be ordered in his allotment, who will, in turn, send it to the Shop (at $10). The Shop Charge is about $40 to install your slotted material IF they approve of your custom order.

I suspect the Shop would restrict the model 28 handle material to linen micarta, being a full-tang model.

Captain Stanaback or Scott can define the parameters of handle material choice.

It’s always best to contact the respective dealer who would be taking the order, or if dealing directly with the Shop, to contact them to be approved or denied.

Normally, the Model 28 is only available in four variations: Brass Hilt/Black Micarta, Brass Hilt/Green Micarta, Nickel-Silver Hilt/Black Micarta, Nickel-Silver Hilt//Green Micarta.

As to the popularity of the Model 28, my May delivery included seven model 28’s, of which six were preordered. The seventh left yesterday for Alabam Land.

Thank you for the information! The 28 is a great piece of kit, for sure. I have the tooling to mill the block.

I am off to play adult league hockey,...

Everyone,
This "project" will never happen, at least not "RMK shop-made". There are no other handle options, except green or black micarta...sorry.
Hope this helps...(or at least saves "time trying")
Stay Sharp, Capt. Chris

Sounds like a Behring Made project possibly.
Pappy, do you have any guidance here?

I have a black micarta/ NS hilt and I think it's a beauty. I do have it in a custom Gutcher 26 style sheath in black ostrich, with the Randall stamp and Model 28 stamp. The sheath is worth as much or more than the knife. Never seen another custom 28 sheath like it.

Behring would be an option. Now, that Ostrich leather sheath!

Maybe my custom Model 28 just needs a special sheath,..

All these easy 28s make we think I should order a 4th 28. This time I’ll try not to give it away to a bud.

Yes, Alan, that "give away" syndrome, is definitely a problem.!! But a #28 Randall does impress.

One of the 28s that I gave away was to a neighbor kid for his birthday. Randall’s prized procession is his Randall #28. It is always on his hip when he goes fishing or when he heads into the bush. He loves that 28.

Since today is the 28th, I thought it would be a good time to share...

I placed my quarterly order with the shop earlier this month. I ordered a model 28.

Expected delivery time?

2028.
