Knife of the Week Sasquatch!!!
I have not been able to get in touch with Mr. Keneflick so this is what I have stored from a previous post on this website http://www.knifetalkforums.com/showflat....amp;Search=true

THE SASQUATCH

SASQUATCH! Brings to mind a big hairy beast doesn't it? Well, Doug Kenefick's Sasquatch Bowie knife is the one I'd want if I was gonna face the beast with only a knife! In November of 1977, after drawings and a wood model had been produced, the first SASQUATCH models were delivered to Doug. The blade design was influenced by knives which had been made by Rod Chappel and the soon to be famous Gil Hibben. Special blade forgings provided a knife with an 11" blade, 2-1/4" wide from 3/8" stock. The long top edge was sharpened, and the blades were serial numbered.

Although this knife is a special blade forging, it belongs to the Randall Model #12 family, which is the bowie group. The top and bottom of the blade both curve down in what is called a recurve style, and it bears a resemblance to a "samba" style blade. As one expects, most of these knives have ended up stashed away in collections. However, it was brought to Doug's attention that at least one of the knives had earned it's keep by killing a wild boar! When asked about the knives ability to penetrate the hunter replied, "Up to the hilt!"

In 1978 a smaller 8" version was introduced in stainless steel only, which is in contrast to the larger model which is available only in carbon steel. The hilt, handle, and butt cap on both sizes are available with the options normally offered on the Bowies. Probably the most popular configuration is the brass lugged hilt, smooth brass collar, stag handle and brass crow beak butt cap. The sheaths are made especially for this design and feature a slight curve to accommodate the curve of the blade. As the 11" models are serial numbered we know that 201 have been produced as of June, 1995. The smaller version is produced without serial numbers and Doug estimates about 225 have been produced. These SASQUATCH models represent the oldest, currently available Randall Dealer Special design, which is still being produced. And, I might add, that a very dressed up SASQUATCH 8" model is the knife chosen to be the prize in the RANDALL KNIFE SOCIETY membership contest in 1995!
Ladies and Gentlemen: could we please see some Sasquatch’s

One of my favourite models, here´s three of them in the "baby" version, with ironwood- bubinga and stag handle.

Very classy photo Peter. I hope you're going to enter it into the Edo contest.

Oh, and teriffic looking knives too. That poor tree didn't stand a chance against 3 Sasquatches.

Joshua, the buttcap is duralu; a nickle-silver one would probably make also sense weightwise to help balance the 8" blade.

Hey Peter, that top Sasquatch in your picture, are you sure its Ironwood? Its lookin an aweful lot like Walnut to me. I make Native Flutes and I got one that the grain looks just like it..just an observation, sometimes its hard as heck to identify.

Vet, it's an ocean-going Unicorn. Only the Eskimo and Alaskan Indians are allowed to take them, but Chief has an inside track.

Sam, you are right, the wood of the top sasquatch is not ironwood but bubinga, I got the woods listed in the wrong order, that´s what happens if one gets excited all over taking out those Randalls from the display cabinet...

Jesse, et. al - I have a copy of one of Doug's catalog mailings from 1980 that shows both sizes of the Sasquatch, and the #16-7 'Special Fighter' (listed as the 'Special Model 16 Fighter') as well.

Interestingly enough, the Sasquatch has always been an expensive knife; while most of the knives in the catalog were priced right around $100 to $200 (including the Starflite(sic) at $100), the most expensive were the Smithsonian Bowie in Ivorite w/brassback option at $315, and the Large Saquatch, also in Ivorite at $310...

Cool knives guys

Welcome Giovanni, I consider myself a friend of Tony, Edo, and Guido, and hope someday to visit your great country.

Great website by the way. In a previous life you were either a cowboy or an Indian...I can't figure out which.

Thanks Steve and Tom.I ordered this knife from Mr.Kenefick back in 2006.I ordered maple.when Doug mailed me to say the knife was ready he said it was the first sasquatch that was messed up and that it was walnut and that I could re-order for later this year but he told me Scott said it turned out so good I may want this one.I'm glad they recommended that.In person the handle is the best looking walnut I've seen.Thank you Scott!

It has just arrived this afternoon.
My new large Sasquatch, with ironwood and black LHS. I am amazed how nice it is, and want to thank the artists at the Randall shop for some incredible work. To be able to grind the complex curves is just amazing. Thanks again guys.
I will have to make a new display cabinet for it, since it is too big to fit my current display. I need to take some better pictures as far as lighting too.
I also want to thank Doug Kenefick for the order, the number on mine is 556.
Peter

That is an excellent specimen. I am very much looking forward to receiving from Doug in early 2010 the "yin" to complete my "yin yang" Large Sasquatch pair.

Thanks for the nice comments guys. This is my first big Randall, and boy is it big. I don't know if anyone uses them for anything but they sure look neat. I have a similarly equipped Nordic Special Bowie due around March next year. I have been trying to obtain all of the dealer specials.

Nice Sasquatch!! Was that shop Stag? I wonder how many they make a month, it has to be one of the more difficult knives to make

My stone isn't white, it is the standard orange, lighting was funny on the stone.

Thank you everyone!
About a year ago I decided to focus on Sasquatches and Rick Bowles Scrim knives as stated in my buy ad on this forum. So selling almost all the other Randalls for these. I wish I could own them all but we all know how that goes.

I ordered a Large Sasquatch from Doug Kenefick last May. He included it in his 08/2009 order, and it arrived on 03/24/2010. It is #572. The options are as follows: Nickel Silver Hilt (a Forward Curved Double Hilt is standard), Aluminum/Black Spacers, Black Micarta Handle in Single Finger Grip Shape, and a Nickel Silver Butt Cap (Radiused). I also specified a black sheath.

Anyway, here she is:

Here she is inside of its sheath:

I received my third Large Sasquatch yesterday, courtesy of Cap, and it is my first one with a single hilt (and thumb notches). Its hilt is Nickel Silver with a squared top. The spacers are Aluminum and Black. The handle is Stacked Leather in #22 Grip shape, along with a Duralumin Crow's Beak butt cap.

Here are a few snapshots that I took a few minutes ago. Note its no-hone sheath:

If you're referring to the thin length-wise lines on the stacked leather handle that appear to be white, then it is an artifact of the lighting. If it's something else, then I am not noticing it.

I just received my first small Sasquatch from Doug Kenefick yesterday. I had it configured very similarly to my large Sasquatch that I received last year (556). This one is stainless steel, shop ironwood in single finger grip style, fc nickel silver hilt, aluminum and black spacers, rounded nickel silver butt, wrist thong and black left hand sheath. I also had it etched with the same number as my large one
Ironwood is truly excellent for shop wood and craftsmanship is superb.

The only strange thing about the knife was there was no stone in the stone pocket for some reason, perhaps someone forgot to put it in.
Here are some photos of it and with it's big brother.
It doesn't get any better than this

I forgot to mention, that this did come in almost a month earlier than expected, so the shop is catching up. smile
Peter

Thanks guys
I am expecting an ironwood Stanaback special later this year and then one of my collections within a collection will be all of the current dealer specials with ironwood except the Buxton Fighter which is only available with synthetic handle materials as it is the only dealer special with a full tang.

Beautiful matched set, Peter!!!... My small Sasquatch is supposed to be ready in April... I've got it set up more like a camping/hunting knife w/ a single N/S hilt, B&A spacers, finger grooved stag handle, and thumb notches... Can't wait!!!... Again, great looking set you've get there.

Thanks Mike, Guido, Jimmy and Steve
I have been lucky in how nice some of the wood on my knives has been. I like how much character the ironwood has with its colors and patterns.
I still like other materials too, but the ironwood is my favorite

So, Peter, which of these Sasquatchs are you going to lug around the hills of Pennsylvania?

Actually, I think the Small Sasquatch is a manageable knife to carry, but would probably prefer to have a porter carry the large one if I had to take it along.

Good taste in knives here. Thanks for sharing.

Bottom one looks bigger because camera splashed it...

My Small Sasquatches are not numbered, but the large ones are numbered. I suspect that if you have a matched pair, then you could ask that the small one be numbered to match the large one--although the etching would be a chargeable option under the 5-chargeable-option rule.

Hi Larry
I had my small Sasquatch numbered with the same number as my large Sasquatch only the number on the small is on the back side and the large is on the trademark side.
Since both of the Sasquatchs are dealer specials, you are not limited to 5 options, which is the case for all dealer specials

Peter

Peter,
I think you meant to say..."You are "NOT" limited to the 5 options"...Did you not?

Capt. Chris--

I might be getting lost in the language here--I understand that dealer specials also have the five-chargeable-options limit.

Of course, I understand that some features might be standard on some dealer specials, and therefore not count as chargeable options because they come normally on those specific knives.

Thanks if you can clarify this.

Larry

Larry,
Within reason, dealers specials are allowed more than 5 options. Blame Peter for confusing everyone.

Great looking knife you have there. I really like the silver and black spacers. The stag is pretty nice also.

Mike--

Very nice example of one of my favorite knives.

I will trade you a nice piece of stag for the one on this knife. I suspect the shop would find it a bit unusual for you to send it back and ask for a trade-out, but I have also been toying with the idea of sending in a Model 23 that I have and asking them to make the blade Stainless. Otherwise it is an ideal example of this model, and I simply overlooked asking for Stainless when I ordered the knife!

Before everybody goes ballistic, or starts sending in requests like this to the shop--it is only a daydream on my part.

Always tinkering with combinations of options, and getting a bit of stag envy now and then. I don't expect this is in any way Freudian, and it must be pretty widespread among knife people. Consider--no matter how nice our knives are, there is always something to aspire to.

Anyway, you got a nice one here!

Here is a project, that just got completed and arrived today. I was lucky to get hooked up with this piece of fossil walrus ivory with a left hand palm swell, and wanted to have a special knife made. This is what I decided on and I want to thank the guys in the shop for doing a superb job as usual.

And you see, I don't just like ironwood either.

Since my first Sasquatch "sighting", I searched and hoped to find a small and large - with handles that were a bit different.

Over the holidays, I was able to snag both models - the small with blue G10, and the large with kind of unusual burl.

[I've tried to attach pics - my apologies if I mess things up - I'm far from proficient...]

Well boys, I lucked out and just got my first one this mourning. nothing fancy but a good work knife. NS front and back, with black handle and silver spacers. I can already say it cuts like a dream. Great shape on the blade. this one is going on my gear, so now I think I have to get one to put in the safe and keep nice. One of the best angle on a blade yet.
Also thanks for all the great info on this site. Buck was right about just going and looking at all the models just to see how others have set theirs up.

Bill - you'll have to contact the dealer directly since he's going to be probably the only one to give you those details - unless, the Randall shop keeps track.

Great Sasquatch there; like the pairing with the toothpick. Will you be engraving that one also?

Does anyone know if large and small knives were ever made in consecutive numbers? I would think maybe but not sure.

I think Doug Kenefick will put a matching number on the small one when you order a pair, but does not assign numbers to the small ones otherwise.

So that's an interesting fact Dave. I didn't know that but I'd like to see an example. Maybe someone has a pair with matching numbers. I seem to learn more here every day.

I have a pair with matching numbers. I didn't know that was an option until Doug offered to do it when I ordered the small one with a handle to match the large one.

Sorry but I don't try to do pictures anymore Warren. Besides, they're just ordinary stag handles, nothing special.

Warren,

The matching number pairs can be ordered; small Sasquatch has the number on the opposite blade side from the large Sasquatch.

Love them Sasquatch's!

My Sasquatch's are both numbered, I had to go look. First ones made with pure silver hardware, presentation Ironwood. Look great, I can't take photos cause I'm dumb.

I just received this 8" Sasquatch from Doug Kenefick, fresh from the RMK shop, to complete the 'Father & Son' pairing with my 11" Sasquatch. Both are numbered "#233". Thanks to Doug, who signed and dated the sheath for me, and was a real pleasure to deal with (which was no surprise, as all of the authorized RMK dealers from whom I've purchased or ordered a knife...Gary, Rick, Wayne, Dave and Capt. Chris...have been great to deal with...professional, knowledgeable and helpful).

If there was a a Randall that I would consider getting again as a a collector, and all my Randall’s are users, then it would be the Sasquatch, amazing looking knife, too pretty To use and also probably too big to carry.

I just got these in the mail today. #12-11 SASQ and #12-8 SASQ with NS2, FCH, ASP, THU SFG and NSB rounded. Both serial #838

Great balance with the heavier NSB.

Thank you all. I wasn't sure what handle material to get and Doug suggested the Thurl Burl. I couldn't be happier. Its like RMK used my hand when they shaped the SFG handle.

Heh, he recommended Thuya when I talked to him a few weeks ago.

"Maybe for next order, today I have something specific in mind."

Very nice Eric, but I'm partial; With the exception of a wrist thong, your large sasquatch is the same as my very first Randall.

About a month or two ago, the seller out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, who owns about 2/3 of all the Randalls on eBay, had a matched pair of sasquatchs for sale with ward gay handles. How? Thought that option was only available on model 20. Rehandled by someone? Didn't pay too much attention at the time, way out of my price range. They didn't last too long, about 2-3 days after they were posted.

Thank you all for commenting on my new pairing.

Brent, I have been told that there was a time period when almost any option was available. These were probably built during that period. That is why the price was so high. FYI Steve Peters is open to offers, the eBay prices are usually a ballpark figure, always best to email Steve if you are interested in one of his copious RMK's on eBay.

I was just curious. They were listed separately, but to my poorly trained eyes, they were identical. If I remember correctly, I figured the price for the pair was close to four grand. Like I said, way out of my league. Before I joined the forum, I purchased a black sheath for my 5-6 from Steve, from the few emails we exchanged, seems like a pretty guy. Randalls
seem to attract that sort of person, from what I've experienced here on the forum.

My mid-century birthday gift arrived today.
NS2,FCH,ASP/BLK,RW,SFG,NSB,WT,black sheath

#860 etched on both.

The shop rosewood came out great.

The 8" is balanced very well. The 11" is a beast. smile

Rick,
Best source for musk ox would be Duke McCaa @ Gulf Breeze Firearms. He's an RMK dealer also. Phone: (850) 932-4867

Thanks Tom & Walker.
Didn't know if it was going to come to pass.....Big thanks to Duke for doing some custom sanding on it so that the pith was centered before it went to the shop.
